VHS : The Mission
I watched The Mission in a class that I'm currently taking about the Literature of Human Rights in Latin America. The Mission is about the colonial time in South America and shows the treatment of indigenous people and human rights. If we really focus on this movie as a human rights oriented, we could see how the Indians were being treated by the Europeans. They would capture, slave them, exploit them, and the Indians have no saying in the matter; for the Europeans they were like animals, they have ... Read More:

For any woman who has experienced the love of a distant land and embers that continue to burn, this is a must see! I just wish it was on DVD already! That last scene, her last answer to his question....what woman wouldn't just love to be her in this movie? Been there...done it. Put this on DVD already!

VHS : King David
This movie has some excellent scenes but departs from the Bible account in many places. Richard Gere plays a very somber David. I think David probably laughed and cried a lot if the Psalms are any indication. Worth watching. Read the book for the real story.

I love period dramas, but this was the worst. I did not even finish the movie because it was awful. The immorality alone took it from period drama to pandering soap opera. The characters are weak-willed, lack integrity and make mistake after mistake which they resolve by less than noble means. From homosexuality to abortion to infidelity, this movie was totally tasteless and not deserving of anyone's time or attention. Skip it.

VHS : Praying Mantis
A delightful work, this film is based upon the award-winning first novel by French writer Hubert Monteilhet, LES MANTES RELIGIEUSES, a cunningly vivid epistolary crime novel transposed effectively to cinema by the late Philip Mackie, noted for his adaptations of classical literature, such as with short tales of Saki. Shown upon occasion on public television in a serialised but complete version, MANTIS has, however, been rather harshly chopped for home video distribution, having over 30 minutes cut away, primarily from the significant ... 6.To Kill a Priest starring: Christopher Lambert, Ed Harris, Joss Ackland, Tim Roth, Timothy Spall

Excellent performances abound. Christopher Lambert in one of his early acting (rather than more recent "movie star") roles. Joss Ackland is his stalwart, dependable best. But it's Ed Harris's flick, one for the portfolio, at a time when he was still (largely) flying under everyone's radar. This reviewer's introduction to Tim Roth and Pete Postlethwaite, as well. Memorable stuff.

Looking forward to seeing director Holland's fine Solidarity tale on a remastered, anamorphic widescreen DVD.

VHS : Lady's Not for Burning (1987)
"The Lady's Not for Burning" is set in a room in the house of Hebble Tyson, Mayor of the small market-town of Cool Clary, more or less or exactly in the year 1400. The story involves Thomas Mendip, a discharged soldier, and Jennet Jordemayne, daughter of a recently deceased alchemist. The disappearance of Matthew Skips has the town in an uproar and although Thomas claims credit for the deep and demands to be hung, Jennet is accused of witchcraft and may well be burned at the stake. He wants to die, but no one will kill him, while her ... Read More:

VHS : Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
I frankly don't understand the bad reviews that the "Times" and others have given this riveting remake of the Mary Shelley classic. This is the first movie rendition of the story that comes anywhere close to the Shelley novel. True to form, the story begins and ends at the polar ice cap...as in the novel. The well-intentioned, albeit obssessed, Dr. F. is engaged to the beautiful Elizabeth. I won't give away the plot by expousing on their relationship, but where past grade-B efforts have had no female counterpart to Dr. F., this film version ... Read More:

"Another monograph?" says Dr. John Watson (David Healy), as he walks into the smoke-filled parlor at 221B Baker Street where he shares quarters with Mr. Sherlock Holmes (Ian Richardson). "Yes," says Holmes, adjusting a long row of burning cigars. "This is on the distinction between the ashes of the various tobaccos. So far, I have enumerated 93 forms of cigar, cigarette and pipe tobacco." This monograph, long thought lost, is now assumed to have been suppressed by the major tobacco companies in Britain and the United States.

With The Sign ... Read More:

I remember seeing this miniseries when it was first shown in the 80's. An epic miniseries than spans many years in the lives of an assorted cast of characters that include Faye Dunaway, Richard Burton, Ann Jillian and many others that went on to become familar faces on TV and film. As most miniseries from this era, there is adultery, murder and sex. If you get a chance to see this don't be discouraged by the length, sit back and enjoy. I only wish this were available on DVD!
