VHS : Secret Garden (1987)
I guess I didn't miss much by not reading this book as a child. I don't really understand why it became a classic. It starts out interestingly enough with a very gothic setting. A little British girl named Mary survives a cholera epidemic in India and is sent to Yorkshire to live with her distant relatives. The author gives a vivid description of the beauty of the moors and the mysterious mansion that the girl goes to live in. The only other interesting part is really when Mary discovers the boy...more ... Read More:

I found this to be in excellent condition but found it better shown on older, smaller TV monitors than on the digital screen of the new 42 inch slim line. The slim line distorted and darkened the scenes more. Jane Seymour did a captivating portrayal of Mary Yellen with more time to develope the character in a TV series than Maureen O'Hara had in an ealier movie version done in black & white with Charles Laughton. I was especially interested in seeing authoress' Daphne du Maurier's Bodmin Moor brought to ... Read More:

VHS : Omen
I have marked 1 star, otherwise I can't go on with this procedure. But the truth is I can't rate "The Omen" at all, because I could never play it. Blu-Rays from Fox are always so tricky and so slow to load (why is that, when Warner or Columbia Blu-rays, for instance, are so easy and fast?) that I was'nt wandering why it was taking about ten minutes to get the main menu on screen. But when I cliked "Play", the menu dissappeared, but the image on the backgroung kept playing, and playing, and playing forever.

I received the DVD The Last of the Blonde Bombshells as a gift and since have ordered 2 as gifts. The response has been terrific! You don't have to be a Judi Dench fan to thoroughly enjoy this delightful period story.

VHS : Tale of Two Cities: Literary Masterpieces
I was impressed by the dual act of Chris Sarandon.

I took one star because the movie did not show much of the characters' passion!

Two men are in love with one woman. It would be hard for her to choose so one of them scarified himself for her happiness. The movie ends with her tears (Alice Krige) as she discovers his true feelings and the sacrifice he made.

It remains one of my favorite movies!

VHS : The Krays - Bonded by Blood
The real crime is that this film is not available on DVD in the US. Peter Medak's brutally violent gangster film based on the lives of Ronald and Reggie Kray who were played brilliantly by the Kemp brothers who fronted the 80s pop band, Spandau Ballet. Guy Ritchie's films don't cut it when it comes to British gangster films trust me. This is the real deal.

This is an intelligent biopic of Britain's most infamous gangsters, the twins who made life safe for East Enders when they weren't running protection rackets or ... Read More:

Mark Twain once said something along these lines about women swearing: "They've got the words, but the tune isn't quite right." I shall distance myself from the subject of Twain on women (run away from it like a thief, as a matter of fact), but turn the observation to the English and their understanding of American hard-boiled detective stories. They've got the words, but the tune isn't quite right.

They certainly have an ear for the patter. (Dashiell Hammett: "The cheaper the crook, the gaudier the patter.") A British critic ... Read More:

VHS : Barbara Cartland's Duel of Hearts
Filmed for British cable in the early 90's, this was one in a series of four movies based on the romantic period novels of Dame Barbara Cartland. DUEL OF HEARTS is the story of Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody), who literally stumbles across the path of handsome Lord Vane Brecon (Benedict Taylor). Vane, who has been wrongfully accused of murder, hides a shameful family secret. Caroline, under the alias of Miss Fry, decides to enter the employ of his household in order to help him. A fascinating tale, filled with Cartland's always-enjoyable and ... Read More:

VHS : Catherine Cookson's Fifteen Streets
Fifteen Streets is about a poor family, and the love of one brother, John for an upper-class school teacher. As usual in Cookson's stories there is a hard gritty edge. People live, people die, and no punches are pulled (sometimes literally) to spare the reader from the sordid realities of hard life during the times. (Presumably 19th century England).

In general, while I enjoyed this film, I didn't much care for John and his family. John's father was an a drunk, his brother a criminal, and the rest of his family not remarkable, except for ... Read More:
