VHS : Respectable Trade
After coming across this film quite accidentally on PBS, I found it thoroughly gripping, and agree completely with the other reviewers' high praise. I am adding my own words merely to encourage viewers not to overlook the extraordinary performance by Anna Massey as Sarah Cole. It is tempting to dismiss Sarah as a simple villain in this tale. However, I found Massey's stark performance deeply moving and expressive of Sarah's profound experience of displacement and loss. She is clearly the brains ... Read More:

This film is a pleasant one. Katherine is in her older days, so she has the tick of her head going from side to side all throughout the film. However, it doesn't detract from the story. There is a lot of Welsh culture reflected. And, also, the tragedy of so many young kids being sent down into the mines. It is a success story and one that emphasizes the value of education and close relationships.

This is one of the best versions of this remarkable story. When is it coming on DVD? With Christopher Reeve, Jacqueline Bisset and Paul Scofield what could be a better cast. It is a engrossing film. Not to be missed...

You will instantly be drawn into this beautiful film as the lives of two strangers become interwoven in a magical dance of the soul. How does one choose between a stable, comfortable life and another life that is filled with true love but tainted with uncertainty?

This movie seeks to answer this question as these two strangers are ripped between what their mind wants and is conditioned to want by friends, family, and society, and what their ... Read More:

This is a riveting and brilliant production on all levels, for those who enjoy good drama, eloquent dialogue and the great acting skills found in British theater.

By contrast, the recent Merchant Ivory film is revealed as banal, vulgar, and dumbed down. The BBC's Charlotte is a great heroine. Uma Thurman's is a boring, neurotic wretch. She makes you wonder what all the fuss is about.

This must be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I actually resented the time I lost forever watching and waiting for something to happen that would instill meaning to this film. It never happened.

Just a long, drawn-out film about selfish and mean-spirited people you can't care about - even when they are murdered. Blaaah!

I was not even able to view this item, let alone review it, as the DVD kept showing "Invalid Region" and would not play on my UK system. I think I should have been told about this as my address was clearly in the UK and Not USA or Canada. I was therefore disappointed with my purchase and lost money on it.A Doll's House

An adaptation more faithful to the original book you will not find. This wistfully acted, beautifully photographed British television production of Anita Brookner's Booker Prize winning novel is a delight to watch over and over again to pick up on nuances perhaps overlooked in a single viewing. Anna Massey, here middle-aged (remember her as Tom Courtenay's young victim in Michael Powell's Peeping Tom?) is perfectly cast as Edith, a romance writer who knows her market and who is in self-imposed exile after leaving her prospective groom waiting, with all ...
