VHS : Show Boat (1936)
I have purchased two (one 'new', the other 'like new') video copies of the 1936 Showboat and returned both because of their less than sterling quality. I love musicals and the 1936 Showboat is my favorite one. Its absolutely incredible that this classic, which so many movie goers think is the best musical on film, hasn't been put in DVD format yet. Why aren't the champions of movies (Scorcese, are you listening?) pushing hard to get this film on DVD? Come on Hollywood, get this film on DVD for all musical ... Read More:

VHS : Everybody Sing
Everybody Sing is the story of an insane family (all somehow involved in show business, which makes them a bit eccentric). The youngest daughter of the family (Judy Garland), has been expelled from four schools due to her intense adoration for jazz and swing music. She has a right to; that is the type of music she excells at singing, and we get to hear a lot of it. Her parents just don't understand, so they attempt to send her away again, but she escapes so she can join a musical describing her own feelings on ... Read More:

VHS : A Night at the Opera
I didn't fully appreciate this film until my second viewing. Now I think it's one of the better Marx Brothers film. The film - filled with funny lines - has all the familiar MB trappings: good slapstick, good and bad jokes and routines, wild scenes, several musical numbers and general overall chaos.

The only thing not appealing to me in the film were some of the songs - not all, just some. Otherwise, it was all fun as Groucho, Chico and Harpo all share humorous lines and/or sight gags. This is the film with the ... Read More:

This is one of my favorite Jeanette MacDonald movies. Even without Nelson Eddy, this movie is full of wonderful music by Jeanette and Allan Jones. Highly recommended!

VHS : A Day at the Races
When the Marx Brothers came to MGM in 1935, boy wonder producer Irving Thalberg had the good commercial sense to package them in a genuine musical comedy which widened their box office appeal enormously although it detracted from the pure gold of their earlier anarchic Paramount comedies.

"A Day at the Races" followed the formula of the hugely successful "A Night at the Opera", but it was was the beginning of the end of their golden period. The problem is simply that while the boys are very good, there is just not enough ... Read More:

One movie I never forgot.....1968 stars Hunky Christopher Jones as the leader of the youth movement to take over America.. I said "Right On!" (I was 15 when I saw it) My 16 year old now who saw it shakes his head and said "What were you thinking?" Finding irony at the end....we all get old (if we are lucky!)... Richard Pryor, Hal Holbrook and the recently deceased Shelly Winters also star in this classic representation of the 60's youth. Enjoy the trip back in time! Very interesting...A "Boomer's movie...Peace!

VHS : Carman - The Champion
Doesn't make any sense. Patricia M. costars in this movie in the same year as she poses pornographically for PETA and after playing years on soap operas in Mexico. During the movie, as a married woman, she enters into deep french kisses with the Christian Pastor gifted musician, Carman.

I saw Carman's Christian concerts many years ago. Very emotionally charged exciting events where he tried to honor God with his gift and subdued the crowd, when they tried to turn the concert into a secular equivalent. What happened since then?

VHS : Cobb
Ty Cobb was certainly one of the greatest ballplayers to ever put on cleats, but this film does not him justice. As a historical biopic it falls far short. Cobb comes across without a shred of humanity and is dislikeable from his first appearance. This really isn't a baseball story per se, it's more of a character study with a baseball backdrop. The story starts near the end of Cobb's life as reporter Al Stump is summoned to Cobb's Tahoe hunting lodge to write the life story of the great ball player (all of which is based on a true story and you can find ...
