I have all of Barbra Streisand movies on Dvd except for this one. This is one of the biggest mysteries. It probably is Barbra's best film ever and it is still not out on Dvd. What are they waiting for? I wish someone knew the answer to this question.

It is not surprising that this film, a work based on Joseph Conrad's thought-provoking novella of the same name, has garnered a wide variety of opinions and perspectives- just from the Amazon reviews alone! People saying its terrible, people who love it, even those who would have it as "art" above a normal television film. Well, I thought I'd add my two cents to the views already expressed. So here goes... First off, one who did not know any better would never be able to guess that it was made for TV. ... Read More:

For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. Whatever the intentions Broadbent's reactions as the camera focuses on his reactions to the unfolding drama in the play demonstrate in a completely convincing way how a Victorian Londoner would react to a (Noh?) play. ... I had been seeking this movie for quite some time. I had been told by several outlets that the movie was no longer available. I looked it up on Amazon.com and was able to find the product. It was purchased and received in a very timely manner. The movie was what I had expected and I could not be more satisfied.

First off, as a Music Conservatory Grad I am well acquainted with the music of the mad and ill-fated Peter Warlock.
Secondly, this film is "based on a true story".It never claims that is IS the truth of what happened in the life of Philip Heseltine, a.k.a.Warlock.So "purists" will just have to get over it! This is a movie! This is a screenplay! These are actors!....and THIS IS ONE DARN GOOD FILM regardless.
Jeremy Northam has long been one of my favorite actors, but this role has given him some real "meat" to chew on as he slips ... Read More:

I bought this for the music and information on the life of Cole Porter.
It was a good movie but didn't have as much music as I expected. It was
interesting to see a bit of a young John Barrowman.

An entertaining HBO film about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Lindsay Crouse has a good role as Marilyn's coach and is fine as usual. Good picture and sound.

I personally was let down when watching the 4 part installment of this movie.
Don't get me wrong - the acting is wonderful, the costume amazing, and the storyline had promise........ but it seems as if it just ended kind of cheezy and abruptly.

My Complaints:
*I didn't care for the amount of time spent in Duronda searching/delving/debating his Jewish past....it became dragged out and almost too religous.
*I like Jodhi May - but her expressions when she is upset are unattractively distracting (kind of a snarl flared nostril thing) ... Read More:
