"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the ... Read More:

VHS : Annie (1999)
I almost cannot imagine a better-cast "Annie" than this one, unless they could somehow get a time machine and bring young Andrea McArdle herself forward to reclaim the title role. Kathy Bates! Alan Cumming! Audra McDonald! Victor Garber as Daddy Warbucks -- maybe the best of all. The musical is regrettably simplified and shortened for its TV running time, but remains extremely enjoyable and, despite budget and set limitations, far livelier than the overwrought 1982 film. The songs are beautifully ... Read More:

I can't figure out why such a great classic hasn't been put on DVD yet!

Maybe the reason I really like this movie is because it shows what a great actor Cary Grant is! You can't help but like him - even if he does play a crook. Along with the drama, you'll laugh hilariously at the comedic moments - one of which includes Cary learning how to knit. he look totally natural knitting away with all these ladies adoringly looking at him. But the one he falls for happens to be the fundraiser of the organization ... Read More:

VHS : An Englishman Abroad
"How can he be a spy?" says Guy Burgess in Moscow, as he quotes the attitude of his former fellow British upper-class diplomats, "He goes to my tailor."

He's talking to Coral Browne, an Australian actress who was appearing as Gertrude in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet in Moscow. It's 1958. She has visited Burgess in his drab apartment which he shares with his government-sanctioned male lover, an aging youth who speaks no English. Burgess has barely learned a few words of Russian. "I know ... Read More:

VHS : Hamlet (1990)
After seeing Olivier's version of Hamlet, I was interested in seeing this version of Hamlet. Admittedly, Mel Gibson was one-hundred percent of my impulse to see this film. I don't usually follow actors when choosing movies; I trust directors more than I trust actors in choosing movies. But Mel Gibson is an exception to this rule: when was the last time the man made a bad movie?-- I can't even think of one.

With this said, I rented this movie and watched it with growing delight and amazement. As always, Mel ... Read More:

7.Wicked Lady starring: Faye Dunaway, Alan Bates, John Gielgud, Denholm Elliott, Prunella Scales
directed by: Michael Winner
December 02, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Wicked Lady
Dunaway made this one when she was living in England raising her son and still married to Terry O'Neill. I love it! She looks great, she's in most of the scenes, nice costumes, and a fairly good plot and dialog. Wicked she is, she eats it up. This isn't Oscar material, and the cast knows it, it's just a lot of fun. This isn't one of Dunaway's Top 5, but it's totally watchable and you see her in most of the scenes. I would not rate it quite as good as Eyes of Laura Mars or even Supergirl, but it's better than The Temp and The Chamber. ... Read More:

VHS : Duet for One
When will this be released on DVD! Julie Andrews, in the right director's hands, is capable of brilliance, and this film shows it. This is a raw performance by Andrews, in which she took risks she rarely took elsewhere (even in the films directed by her husband, who was perhaps not her best director). There's now a sad parallel in her character's plight and her own life (years after this movie) in that both Stephanie and Andrews each lose the talents that informed their lives and self-images: Stephanie loses her ability to play the violin (because ... VHS : His Butler's Sister (B&W)
One of Deanna Durbin's best movies of the period, HIS BUTLER'S SISTER (1943) features the adorable songbird in a comedic story of mixed identities and showbusiness dreams. Co-starring with Franchot Tone, one of her most formidable and appealing leading men, Deanna shines brightly here!

Stagestruck teen Ann Carter (Deanna Durbin) gets off the train in New York city, and goes to stay with her rich older brother (Pat O'Brien) in his ritzy mansion. Unbeknownst to Ann, he's actually the butler of young Broadway composer Charles Gerard (Franchot Tone). Desperate ... Read More:
