| We had this printer for about 3 years. When it is working well, it works well. On the other hand, a small amount of dust in the printer caused horrible smudging and ruined photos. Impossible to clean. No instructions for cleaning the inside of the printer to stop smudging. I managed to wipe some out with my finger the first time, but that didn't last long as now it is doing it again and I can't see anything in there (yes we close the covers on a regular basis), so must be something stuck on ... | This printer is not merely user-indifferent; it is user-hostile. The black-and-white print quality is very good, but it eats its own weight in expensive consumables several times a year. The icons on the LED panel are largely incomprehensible. The paper tray is a flimsy piece of crap, with utterly illegible black-on-black lettering that gives no indication of manner of use. | Two of six 5740 printers have had to be replaced because they failed to feed paper properly. The usage is very low, but the environment is very dirty, so that might contribute to the problem. I have good success with many different HP printer models, but would not recommend this printer.

| I gave it one star because there was no other option. I owned a Scanmaker E3 for years (bought in 1997 and retired in 2007) without issue and now I wasted 100.00 on this no longer supported POS. I've owned this for about a year now. Works well except for the software, which crashes often, and their tech support is a waist of time. Does not support Leopard 10.5, which has determined the rating of zero. Makes me wonder how many more scanners will not be supported. Their website is often down and other reviews state the same ... | This is easily one of the best scanners I have ever used. The color is good, but most of all, this scanner is FAST. It gets the job done faster than most scanners that are 4 years newer. When paired with Vuescan aftermarket software ([...]), I can create mutli-page PDFs with a single click and automate workflow, with calibrated color. Most reviews here center around the bad driver/software interface - to be honest I have never found any "bundled" scanner software to be tolerable. | Be aware buyers. Epson still doesn't have windows XP driver for this scanner. There is absolutely no reason the drivers are not ready as of Feb 2002. Even the ones coming out is not certified by Microsoft. I usually like Epson printers but this scanner is totally useless with my Windows XP system. |

| I use this with a 4 MP camera. The result is stunning. You cannot tell the prints were digital originals. The quality is that good. One caveat... will not work with Windows 2000 or XP. Win 98/ME only :-( Other than that, highly recommended. |

| I've had this scanner for over 3 years and I've never got a decent scan out of it. I've had to play around in Photoshop to make anything usable, but detail in never there. Everytime I scan I have to unplug it from the mains then replug it to restart it so that the software can find it. I've updated to all the latest software, but it never got any better. The default settings are unusable, the auto scan select never includes the whole image to be scanned so you have to delete it and do it manually again, it's just rubbish! So I'm here at Amazon ...
