| This lens exceeded my high expectations! I read all of the reviews here and did extensive research before I paid this amount of money for the lens. The first thing I was worried about was the reports of slow focus because of the older auto focus in lens gear system. I use this lens on a D300, and though it is slower than an AI-s, I find it much faster than previous users mentioned. | This is a very nice lens - I read several reviews and decided to go for it. The colors are a bit on the warmer side (more red than reality) - but you can fix it either on the camera (by lowering saturation) or on ACDSee (reduce red color).
Perhaps a bit on the soft side, but I am learning that DSLR images are great and lend themselves to sharpening with any software without much noise or artifacts. After a tad bit of sharpening, its difficult to tell the picture apart from a much more expensive ... Read More: |

| Interestingly, the price has crept up a bit on this lens in the last few months. It's value must be becoming more apparent to more folks. Nice to have bought before it went up instead of vice versa.
Nevertheless, this is the most reasonably priced of the Canon L Primes & is a perfect one to start out with, if you don't own any yet. This lens is tack sharp, has very true, very vibrant color and high contrast. In all these areas, it is probably just shy of the 135mm, 85mm and 50mm lenses, but this is a discerning ... Read More: |

| I was first in line to buy this lens when it first came out. It is a very convenient lens for everyday shooting. However, I was extremely disappointed with how soft the lens is. The center of the frame can be sharp, but there is a rapid falloff to softness in the corners. I wish Nikon would update this useful zoom with better optics. Their 18-200 VR is a great lens for DX sensors, but this one for full-frame cameras isn't worth bothering with. |

| I have been using Olympus 4/3 equipment since the advent of the E-1. I thought that the 2X teleconverter would be a nice addition to my lenses. Using my 50-200 mm zoom I was disappointed that the otherwise amazingly sharp lens became very soft wide open (f7) with the teleconverter. By upping to f11 the image sharpened and useable. Of course, I was hoping for a quick and dirty way to get a truly super-telephoto lens but it was not to be. i think that it was my expectation rather than the lens performance which was at fault here but none-the ... | There is very little that I can say that hasn't been written already about this lens. It has spectacular low light capabilities and can make the background blur to creamy oblivion. Matched with the Canon 5D or better makes this an ideal portrait lens. The focus is fast and accurate.
Of course the price is steep, but with Amazon offering 12 mo. financing, it made this purchase much more affordable. Recommended for advance amateurs and above. |

| I've been using the 85mm f/1.8D for almost a year now, and took a step out to get the f/1.4D version, and was not disappointed! The 85mm f/1.4D lens is the cream machine when it comes to bokeh. At almost every f-stop, the bokehs still come out rounded, but for the 85mm f/1.8D lens, there are certain f-stops where it is not rounded, but can see the polygonal shape from the aperture blades. The f/1.4D lens is almost 3 times the price of the f/1.8D lens, but the built and performace is also better.
