| Since Solti gives us a splendidly vibrant and dramatically perceptive account of this great score, it is particularly unfortnate that the soloists are so unsatisfactory. Hildegard Behrens may have been a moving Isolde for Bernstein, but here, as Leonore, she is out of her element. Her wild and woolly singing almost makes Martha Mödl on the old Furtwängler recording sound as pure as Emma Kirkby. Leonore as Elektra; or possibly Salomé? You get the idea.
