| since jazz is not my forte if i heard this anywhere without knowing what it was i would have thought it to be one of the jazz giants of the 50's and 60's. somehow this cd crosses the gap of classic jazz to smooth jazz but it is not smooth jazz as defined today.
doing songs by charlie parker,sonny stitt,sonny rollins,acker bilk will give you a feel of the prowess of this young sax musician. playing with him are recognizable names as clark terry,nicholas payton, benny green and kenny washington. ... Read More: |

| at first listening to this cd,it was very confusing to me,all sorts of conformsions of callamity entered my mind,and i thought what in the world is this that i am listening to.but after several listenings,the genius of john coltrane was very prevelant,with his use of abstract rythums,and odd time signatures,especially on the song attaining,really captivated me,then i thought this is brilliant,and it's become a mainstay in my listening repituar ever since. |

| This is a supremely superior session. The 'crowd pleaser' pleases exactly as it is meant to, and when Cannonball comes in off of Bobby Timmons' 'intro' it is simply sweet, satisfying SOUL. Nat sounds great, too - and with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, this really is a workshop. Don't misunderstand, there are some 'clams' here; after all, it is a Live Workshop (Timmons plays a monster clam about 8 bars after Nat's solo on "This Here" - and notice how Louis Hayes thinks it's ending when it's not!), but the SPIRIT ... | "Coltrane" starts with "Out Of This World", a 14-minute long song which is essentially the centerpiece of the album, though it's the opening track. It's written by Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer, but it sounds like a Coltrane-penned piece. I wasn't aware of any other major jazz instrumentalists playing this song: Coltrane wasn't the first but Kenny Burrell and Donald Byrd did a version shortly after Coltrane's came out! At any rate, it's the best song on this CD. "Soul Eyes" is a good ballad. "The Inch Worm" feels too ... Read More: |

| I can only listen to this album maybe once a year. The melodies, the chords, the feelings it invokes are so beautiful, so haunting that when I listen to this I can't get the sounds out of my head for a couple of days. I usually have absolutely no clue what to put on the turntable (I have the vinyl reissue from 1982, which regrettably doesn't have all the songs on this CD) after I've listened to this, so I sit in the dark, unable to put on the light and examine the shelves.
