| I hadn't heard this Carpenter CD, yet. Tonight Jim Svejda (KUSC FM, L.A.) played three selections, the Chopin, Ellington and Carmen. I was on the way home from Thanksgiving dinner, and I really had to concentrate on the traffic while this outrageous, inventive, screamingly virtuosic avalanche came at me in the car. | Oh, yes, the conductor had a few 'mishaps' in certain places, and the supporting cast of Micaela and Escamillo are not nearly as good as the leading roles of Carmen and Jose, but overall, this production is about the most entertaining and riveting available on DVD so far, and the 'smaller' roles of the Gipsy camp, are in fact nearly as good as the two leading ones.
Antonacci is a 'soprano' Carmen - this is the first time I see and hear about her, and the impression is not as bad as some critics would allege. ... Read More: |

| The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will let the great composer speak. |

| Kleiber's account of the 5th stands out because of its precision and speed. Usually these two factors relate inversely and therein lies Kleiber's achievement, I would say, especially considering that this symphony's drama requires an urgency. Karajan's '63 recording is precise and reasonably quick, however it is a rather interpretive account and also pares off some of the space between the strings, bass, and brass. | This production is a beautiful show to watch. The cast is exciting, but so little French. So, if you do not pay too much attention to the pronunciation, then you will enjoy the creamy and lyric voice of Ms Netrebko, who portrays a strong Manon, dedicated to pleasure (see L'hotel de Transylvanie act). Villazon is, as always, very (some would say too much) involved in his character, but his voice was, at that time (2006), still responding (though he is asking too much).
