I know that everyone has, at one point or another, opened a review with the words "arguably the greatest album ever" or "It changed my life" or something similar. I will be no different. This is certainly the best John Coltrane album, though there are plenty of competitors, and it might be the best jazz album ever. I'll stop short of "best album", because it would be impossible for me to go that far. In a way, it also changed my life, or at least the way I thought about music. Before I bought it, ... Was delightfully suprised by this album. I've always admired both men, but the two of them together brings back a feeling to music that has been missing.

I'm a huge fan of Miles Davis and this is my favorite album of his. Everyone who listens to jazz knows the opening track So What, but my favorites are Blue in Green, and All Blues. If you are new to jazz this is a must buy. One of the greatest jazz albums of all time.

ah, ellington and coltrane. two of my favorites. here they produced a very fine set of jazz, indeed. this disc has a bit more bite than the ellington and johnny hodges duo albums, but the bite is tame by coltrane's usual standards. coltrane is more restrained here than is usual, but that tone remains a spellbinder. while this is not amongst the very best work that either of these gentlemen have done, it is an album that any jazz fan would do well to acquire.

(Lee Morgan, trumpet, Benny Golson, tenor sax, Bobby Timmons, piano, Jymie Merrit, bass, Art Blakey, Drums Blue Note 40030

This session introduces the great Lee Morgan to the recording world and is digitized from Blue Note recording session 40030 It has the wide open tenor of Benny Golson. Both he and Morgan seem especially suited for the religiosity of this session especially the title cut "Moaning," which is pure funk with a capital "F".

The rest of the session is rather mundane but still of very ... Read More:

This is a wonderful debut for Herbie and clearly shows the influence of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" as well as provides hints of "Bitches Brew" in a couple of tracks as well i.e. modal work plus hints of the avant-garde. Freddie Hubbard does some great work here and so does Coleman on sax with Herbie expertly supporting on piano. The first and last tracks are the strongest although there really isn't a weak track here. However, this version, unlike the clearly inaccurate product description, is not the Japanese mini-lp sleeve remastered ... Read More:

This is without question a desert-island disc for me. Not just one of Dexter's best, but one of the best jazz albums, period. Dexter is a bottomless resevoir of ideas, all seamlessly, brilliantly strung together in that languid, big-sound style of his. He seems so relaxed but this disc swings HARD. Please give recognition to drummer Billy Higgins, whose understated and tasteful style is a big factor in this disc's swing quotient. He always plays the right thing at the right time and scupulously complements the rest of the band. His versatily ... Read More:
