| Miles Davis' 1960 album Sketches Of Spain shows a wide variety of Jazz with a few Spanish sounding instruments, which highly explains the reason for the album's title. The horns on the album are so deep and the Spanish bells throughout the background helps elevate the sound. The tracks that I enjoyed the most are "Concierto de Aranjuez (Adagio)" and "Solea", both songs clocking in over 10 minutes. | I confess that I prefer the Capital Bones' renditions of these same arrangements. The REAL hook for me on this CD was the original Roulette version of Maynard Ferguson's "Christmas for Moderns." While the later version of this tune on the second Concord Christmas compilation is nice, Maynard was in better form on the early one and the later one lacks the raw "electricity" of the Roulette version. The only other way I know to get the original "Christmas for Moderns" on CD is to try and get your hands on the Maynard ... Read More: |

| One of the things i'll never understand is how John got so far away from the path he himself created to follow this 'empty' one. This continues his trend of hollow passionless works of late. Nothing to do with 'Extrapolation', Mahavishnu, Old Shakti or even some of his more jazz oriented work of the 80s and 90s. Hated the plastic sound of this production. Buy at your own risk. |

| Frankly, I tend to agree with the reviewers who think there's simply too much ambiance noises and announcements collected here; perhaps the earlier studio dominated version was not such a bad idea?
But, than again, for as Ellington fan(atic)s it is absolutely essential to know all the fascinating details from the booklet and to hear how it all sounded at the spot... | Interesting and creatively clever idea with equally clever play. Mellow and enjoyable from beginning to end, with Byron excelling throughout. This is an intriguing lineup of music and song which at first might seem a bit odd or disjointed, but it ain't. It actually sounds thematic, like an aural drama of some sort..., with one possible exception. The song "Reach Out I'll Be There" dosen't quite seem to fit the motif. | These recordings from 1947-49 set the standard for "jazz with strings". Parker's playing is brilliant, as usual.
The strings add context and a luxuriant mood to Parker's sound. Only Stan Getz's "Focus" from 1961 compares in quality to "Charlie Parker with Strings: The Master Takes". Both are pivotal in the development of the "Third Stream" genre of jazz. Both occupy special places in my collection. |

| Duek Ellington was my first introduction to Jazz Music and in truth after him and no offense to anyone else,but his standards of Music and overall Composition, arragements and his Band were set so high that you could forever be lost in his groove and never want to come out. he had a classy flair for playing and a vibe that matched it.
