If you're finding your way to Dutilleux for the first time, these might be enjoyable; however, save your money and go for the really upper tier recordings of this music. Dutilleux's music requires security in execution. It requires virtuosos in every seat of the ensemble. | It's unfortunate that Arte Nova's Dutilleux recordings aren't more recommendable. Like the previous issue of the Symphony No. 2, Shadows of Time and Metaboles, this issue is simply not competitive. Again, the individual wind players lack the confidence in Dutilleux's complex passagework that is necessary to achieve a real sense of exuberance--confidence that is on bold display in Tortelier's fine recordings on Chandos.
