| As with the first Christmas CD that I reviewed, which technically goes hand in hand with this particular Christmas CD (originally they were sold as a set), I must say that this one is just as amazing as the other one. As I said, these are the original songs by the original artists and the sounds are top notch. Burl Ives was a local son from my hometown area and many of us will remember him as "Sam the Snowman" in "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and there are many other wonderful singers on the CD from ... | This is a recording of Ella singing Christmas standards and singing 'em straight. It is NOT jazz. And it most definitely is not Ella at her best.
Ella enhances the Christmas standards with her clear beautiful voice, and some of the tunes here are done beautifully - "The First Noel," for example. "God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen" comes off all right too, even if Ella isn't allowed to swing it. The choral arrangements backing her on many other tunes are a real annoyance. The additional ... | This has been my #1 favorite jazz/blues Christmas CD for many years (and I've collected quite a few). Sorry to disagree with the last person but it is definitely not "smooth jazz". Roland Kirk never played a note of "smooth jazz" in his life. His "We Free Kings" is about the wildest rendition of a Christmas song that I've ever heard and I still can't sit still whenever I hear it. | As my fourteen-year-old and I were listening to the line "... the way you sing off-key..." my daughter laughed that neither were singing off-key. Of course not- in their own way, each defines musical perfection.
Can't We Be Friends?, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Tenderly and Cheek to Cheek are reasons to buy this album. I'd even go so far as to say they are reasons to listen to jazz. | I believe that this is Ella's finest recording session. I know that that is saying a lot---especially when you consider how great she was on the "Duke Ellington Songbook." The songs, Ella's voice, the arrangements---this CD has it all and it is at its very best! If I could, I would give this CD six stars!! |
