Maybe these don't represent absolutely the greatest duets in all opera. But they represent some awfully good ones! The CD begins with a duet from "Les Pecheurs des Perles" (Puccini) and ends with the gloomy Miserere (from "Il Trovatore," by Verdi). In between are many more operas, from Donizetti and Mozart to Strauss and Wagner. Some of the finer singers of the past half century appear in various of these duets.

A bit more detail on a handful of these to illustrate.

I can understand the criticism and praise from the reviewers on this interpretation. Once again, it's a matter of taste and ultimately liking the balance between technical skill and expression. Sometimes the tempi can alter the course of appreciation as well, and I think that's more the case here.

To my ear, this is a very solid and beautiful rendition. Perlman plays with a very distinct crispness and Zukerman contributes handsomely on this recording. The slow movement of the double violin concerto ... Read More:

Really easy to recommend.

Mozart is my most favorite composer, Perlman my most favorite violinist, and Barenboim my second most favoriate pianist (Vladimir Ashkenazy being my first). When you have all three together, even more spendid!

I also recommend Barenboim's Mozart Piano Sonotas. I personally think it is the best Mozart Piano Sonata set out there.

What flaw you're wondering? The slow moments are just too slow. It's not that I'm against slow music if that's what you're wondering, but Beethoven surely didn't mean for this music to be played at such tortoise paced speeds. I have heard at least 2or 3 renditions by other pianists of the slow movements and they are all faster. Barenboim surely meant to play these at his own peculiar tempo. Whether to be "iconoclastic" or not I think he misses the mark. Listening to the Waldesntein finale is excrutiatingly frustrating. Playing it more ... Read More:

All good. Elgar the way it should be played- plenty of emotion. Late romanticism should be played from the heart- almost to the extreme of 'haming it up'. The tears will roll, the joy of laughter is obvious- its fantastic. I wish today's performers were brave enough to let their hair down sufficiently when playing music from this era.

After a horrendously exhausting day, I listened tonight to this recording, and found myself applauding at the end -- and then astonished that there was also applause on the CD! I had not realized it was a live recording. In the meantime, this care-giver, this senior citizen, this ex-violinist, this ex-pianist, this me, had 55.13 minutes of sheer joy. Thank you Mssrs. Beethoven, Perlman, Ma and Barenboim.

What can be said about the most beautiful and exciting cellist playing the most beautiful music selection perfectly recorded.
I laughed, I cried and above all I wished she was around today.
The angels turned in their harps for cellos.

Beautifully interpreted, Barenbolm plays delicately and skillfully. This music is perhaps the epitome of the romantic classical era of piano music. Mendelssohn composed piece after piece of melodic and engaging piano music that eventually became this complete cycle. Some pieces may grab you more than others but overall, everyone of them expresses emotion. It surprises me that these pieces are not better known to anyone who loves classical piano music.
