| While my wife was strolling the aisles of a photography equipment show in Boston in search of great deals, I found a booth loaded with "cut out" CDs. My only purchase that day was, "Four Duke". It is the best "sight unheard" CD I ever purchased. In my ever expanding collection of jazz CDs, this one is never far from the front of the stack. | OK, I confess. I bought my copy at a yard sale. I also confess up front that I'm a musical snob and generally have no use for fragged excerpt recordings like this, but as a former Horn player, I couldn't resist (and for only a buck...). If nobody reads this review, I'll get my buck back on my own next yard sale. The rain and thunderstorn background is possibly the silliest thing I've ever heard. It doesn't match, complement, or enhance the music in any way (and the music is what it's all about). ... Read More: |

I also confess up front that I'm a musical snob and generally have no use for fragged excerpt recordings like this, but as a former Horn player, I couldn't resist (and for only a buck...). | Blow by Blow - The CD is what I remember from the past, which is what I was wanting.
After listening to the CD, I realized that I used to LOVE the LIVE version of some of these tunes... and so, I bought the Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer LIVE CD. Blow by Blow is a studio recording which I find a little "dry" when compared to the energy of the LIVE CD... But it's still Jeff Beck! |

| In contrast to FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS, this, Thomson's second opera in collaboration with Stein, is disappointing. Stein's libretto is, frankly, tedious (vacuous, frought with redundancies--whereas the more hermetic, nonsensical text of FOUR SAINTS is (though, for many, initially frustrating) continually interesting. That text inspired joyful music. But Thomson's setting for THE MOTHER is largely uninspired. The overture is wonderful, however, and his twice arranging 3 paragraphs to be sung simultaneously ... | This is the best, most worthwhile Beck single available. All 4 b-sides are fully realized and excellently produced songs... all reminiscent of the Mutations (and Sea Change) style. Everything here is high quality... Electric Music and the Summer People is one of the most fun Beck songs...this is a different recording of the song than found on the old New Pollution single, rerecorded with a full band. |
