| This recording showcases Alex Shapiro's eclectic style, and knowledge of her craft. "Notes from the Kelp" includes a spectrum of works with quite different "characters" and styles. The recording showcases Ms. Shapiro's broad range of compositional ability.
I think my favorite works on this CD are "Current Events" , and "At the Abyss" not only because the multiple movements cover such an emotional range but are still connected. I really like the beautiful melodies of "Phos Hilaron" ... Read More: |

| I was not a huge fan of Midnight Vultures -- I don't seem to ever feel like playing it -- but almost everything else Beck has done has been genius, and this overlooked album is no exception. It amazes me how something this original and this good didn't get more attention. When I first got it I played it all the time, then I put it away for a few weeks and then had to start playing it all the time again. As the months/years go by, it's earning a place among the albums that will never grow old for me ... Read More: |

| The most remarkable aspect I find of Ginette Neveu's way with Debussy's Sonata (recorded in 1948, as she wasn't yet 30, and a year and a half before her death in a tragic airplane crash) is the freedom of her approach. Her tempos are slower than Debussy's metronome marks and more spacious than what was custom then (witness Thibaud-Cortot in 1929 Debussy, Faure and Franck, Francescatti-Casadesus in 1947 Bartok: Sonata for 2 Pianos and Percussion/Debussy: Cello Sonata and Heifetz-Bay in 1950 Heifetz with Rubinstein ... | What a gathering together of sounds including oboe, english horn, flute, piano, percussion, harp, bass, and synthesizer. Even frogs, crickets, coyotes grace this CD, making it a calming and excellent listening piece. All focused around the well played DR's of Caplan. Especially enjoyed the William Gtrant Still miniatures and the Ysef Lateef blues number. |
