134.Sea Change by: Beck
December 24, 2002
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Music : Sea Change
Buried in most of Beck's music is actual ability to write songs and melody, once you strip away all those loops and trickery, songs are buried under there. Sea Change brings all this to the front with perhaps one of the best breakup albums ever written, and I say this owning albums going back 40 years and over 8,000 songs in my iTunes library. Sea Change never feels old, never feels dated, and is a brilliant late night album to put on and just ponder. I'd give it six stars if I could, it's that good.

Music : There and Back
This album came out at the same time I was just learning to play electric guitar. Beck's playing was everything I wanted mine to be. Dynamic, melodic, thoughtful, smoking! This still is up there in my list of all time favorite albums that I never seem to grow tired of. I wish they would reissue this one in SACD format like Blow by Blow.

British pianist Gordon Beck is simply not as well known here in the States as he should be, given his long and fruitful career and hopefully this reissue will help set that right. The propulsive rhythm section of what at that time constituted the Phil Woods Rhythm Machine gets two extended workouts, all recorded in one morning while on a European tour. It would be fine to cite the Bill Evans primer as a major influence on Beck, but it would be selling him short. The breadth and diversity of ground covered in this session is astounding, ... One of those `indie comedy-dramas' which come and go without much fanfare throughout the year, Year of the Dog starred Molly Shannon, Laura Dern, John C. Reilly and Peter Sarsgaard in a film about a lonely, but content office worker whose life is shattered by the sudden death of her little dog. Struggling to come to terms with her surprisingly bitter feelings about her pet's death, she struggles from one failed romantic possibility to another - until, eventually, she finds new meaning in her life: the animal rights movement, and specifically ... It is wery old numbers and the sound is bad. It is not fair against custumers to say, that the pack is from 1999.

I am wery disapointed.

This one is treasured by guitar fans for a glimpse of John McLaughlin (or "Johnny McLaughlin" as the sleeve has it) in 1967, two years before his debut on _Extrapolation_. It's a clever, maybe too-clever idea for an album--I have no problem with the idea of jazz-goes-pop or pop-goes-jazz, but pianist Gordon Beck's hyperactive Bill Evans style & elaborate recomposition/reharmonization of tunes like "Michelle", "These Boots Were Made for Walking" and "Good Vibrations" isn't entirely to my taste. (Nowadays I think jazz musicians are more comfortable ... Read More:
