Du Pre was, and will unsupassed by contemporary cellists for generations. She is still the best, and will be remembered by many forever.

I have to agree with Randolph Wagner. This CD gets 5 stars for the choral pieces minus 3 stars for the recording quality. It sounds like the recording was transferred from an 8-track tape. This CD should have been sent back and remastered. If you have other Shaw CD's, you can hear for yourself the difference. This is NOT a quality recording. Why did they let this slip out the door?

These are beautiful performances of beautiful works. The New Vienna Quartet's approach present Schönberg's quartets with the focus of being embedded in the tradition from Brahms rather than as the revolutionary and forward-looking works they are, but they are none the worse for that. It probably means that you are recommended to acquaint yourself with another point of view as well, e.g. the Kolisch, Arditti or Leipzig quartets, especially if you lament the New Vienna's omission of some early works. Yet, newcomers ... Read More:

I'm not familiar with Brendel's Schoenberg "Piano Concerto", but Boulez has a special vision for Schoenberg. Listen to his "Moses and Aaron", sharp, cleanly impassioned, razor-sharp edges, provincial the way Bach is played, purely functional, unadorned phrases, and musical shapes. Uchida as well brings a controlled passion to the work, not compromising the work's content in any way. In fact that is a dangerous trap of over-determining Schoenberg, especially the music he wrote in exile, as this Concerto. The darkest clouds of Europa ... Read More:

Die glückliche Hand alone is already a good reason for purchasing this CD - this work is very rarely recorded (Boulez's was only the second recording ever, and it was issued in 1981!), the few other recorded alternatives being mainly live performances (including one by as legendary a conductor as Hermann Scherchen).

Here is your only opportunity to get the full libretto, and what strikes one is that it almost entirely consists of scene indications, with the Man's words reduced to a minimum (he mainly admires the woman's beauty and wishes ... Read More:

Much better than the Boulez '77 reconding and even more than the Boulez '97 recording with Christine Schafer, but not comparable with the earlier Boulez recording (and rendition) that I have on tape reacorded in the seventies from a friend's LP. I talked about this recording on my two reviews of the two Boulez recording available here, and I said that I don't know nothing about this except it's a Boulez one and it's earlier than the other two. I asked if someone, or maybe the specialists, knows if this my tape from LP recording is available on cd, and I asked to tell us. Because it's ... Read More:

This cd contains what is simply the best recordings of all of Schoenberg's solo piano music and of his Piano Concerto. Pollini is brilliant in establishing this music as the modern decendant of Brahms. Everything sounds completely musical and logical (it makes sense musically--sounds natural). It sounds as if Brahms had lived into the 20th Century. The contribution of Abbado in the performance of the Piano Concerto is not to be overlooked, either. Abbado is probably the finest conductor of the music of the "Second Vienese School," and this performance is no exception. Only Glenn Gould comes ... Read More:
