| I take my hat off to Schiff's 'Hammerklavier' Sonata, which takes off from the first bar with real passion -- a rare thing, in my experience, for this chilly pianist. He far outdoes Brendel and Gilels in imagination and breadth of vision throughout this massive work. Ricther could raise the hair on your head with his almost violent attack and intense concentration -- with him, the 'Hammerklavier' was a matter of life and death -- but Schiff isn't out to recreate Beethoven's soul struggles. | Schiff spent twenty, yes 20 !!! years to study these Beethoven's 32 sonatas before he would record them and start giving concerts of the cycle. I happened to have the good fortune to be able to listen to every one LIVE that he performed so far. The last two installment will be in March and April, 2009.
The entire CD collection comprise of eight CDs but they are the best (on Beethoven's sonatas) so far. I have other complete sets. I am thinking of giving them away without regret. He is that ... Read More: |

| I bought as much of this new series of Sonatas as I could get hold of after listening short excerpts. Mr Schiff provides quite a wonderful, new and fresh interpretation of these great works, but unfortunately he tends to spoil some of the wonder by literally hammering out his fortissimo passages in a way that might even surprise and upset those of us who value interpretation that is true to the presumed playing style prevalent during Beethoven's lifetime.

| Firstly, I think it is quite wonderful that these recordings bring out so many different views and reactions. I really enjoy these recordings, but they are not faultless (obviously!). I wouldn't describe his phrasing as stop/go, but he does have some moments of slightly odd phrasing. Muddled - definitely not. I do find that he plays the piano quite hard and it does become overly percussive in fortissimo parts especially in the first movement of the Appassionata (Volume VI). | Andras Schiff is releasing a complete cycle of the Beethoven 32 piano sontats. This is Volume 4, featuring three of his better-known symphonies (The Op 26 "Funeral March", the Op 27 No 2 "Moonlight, and the Op 28 "Pastoral"). The sonata which steals the thunder is the Op 27 No 1 (the first of the sonatas "quasi una Fantasia").

| Andras Schiff's rendition of this whole series of 32 Sonata's is breathtaking. His skill, interpretation and dedication to these pieces is remarkable. Made so much more enjoyable by his lecture series on all the Beethoven Piano Sonatas available on the Guardian Unlimited website which makes this volume all that more accessible and enjoyable |

| I feel more respect to Schiff's playing after listened to his recent lectures on all Beethoven sonatas, and bought all his current released Beethoven sonata CDs (Vol.I-III) and will get his next release when it's available. I used to think Schiff as a good Bach or Mozart interpreter but hardly would think of him as that good on Beethoven, and his new Beethoven CDs certainly have proved that I was wrong about him.
