The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will ... It is difficult to put into words how much I enjoy this music. While I realized that this had been recorded in the 50's and I was prepared for some background noise, what I received instead was a kind of majesty and purpose that is difficult to find today in an orchestra or its conductor. There is no doubt about the glorious interpretation of this music and the orchestra is likewise single minded.
I freely admit that I purchased this CD realizing that my only copy on digital vinyl left me tied ... Read More:

A wonderful album. I have several copies of Handel's Messiah, but the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus by Robert Shaw's singers is exceptional, outstanding. I was inspired to have my young son listen to this album: Verdi's "Dies Irae", Orff's "O Fortuna", and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus".

Notice that there are 3 versions of "Dies Irae" on this album. It's nice to hear others. I am not normally a fan of Requiems. I will say that I do like Bach's Mass in B Minor and the Kyrie Eleison excerpted ... Read More:

I love this record. I've always loved "Pictures" but never owned a copy. When I found it was available on SACD, I had to get it since it's the best consumer distribution format I've ever heard. The recording was great in its day and still holds well over many more "technologically advanced" recordings. Really, the most of the best classical recordings are done with 2 or 3 microphones and a stereo or 3-track tape recorder. My one peve with this album is that they used some pretty heavy digital noise reduction which ... Read More:

Borodin's Prince Igor with choir is my favourite music, having once sung myself in Chesterton Choir Cambridge, and I've been searching for definitive recording. Most of recommended recordings hurry the music along spoiling the beautiful melody and intricate harmony. Solti's Formula One rendition is the worst one even though highly recommended by Penguin Guide.

I picked up this CD in a second-hand shop in London simply because it was cheap, and got a nice surprise. This unkown conductor paces each section ... Read More:

This is a fantastic album, not only for lovers of Russian music. It's actually my favorite recording of Tchaikovsky's "1812", masterfully conducted by Neeme Jarvi, and beautifully accompanied by the great Gothenburg Symphonic Chrous, the Churchbells of Gothenburg and real 19th-century cannons provided by an artillery regiment. Continue with Tchaikovsky's "Marche Slave": a fantastic melodic piece, so often undervalued by snobbish critics. One of the best pieces in this record is Borodin's "Polotvsian Dances", from the opera "Price ... Read More:
