| Well let me tell you, Beethoven was a ground breaking composer in just about every category he composed in and his SQs are NO Exception. B amazes me with his twists and turns. B was a moody individual and his SQs reflect his personality. Everything here is exceptional. He pushes the limits and then pulls back the reigns and provides you with a heart wrenching slow mvt which melts you. There is something for everyone, he includes a full range of emotions.

| This is a truly fascinating CD. Perhaps it doesn't have the greatest balance in terms of pieces, but that certainly shouldn't put you off at all. The opening piece (the title track if you want to be "pop") is a truly sublime Lisztian work - you'll find none of the fire and virtuosity that you may have come to expect from him. | Since no one's reviewed this, I'll wade in, ignorance notwithstanding.
Just bought this set last night so I don't know what to think yet. Picked it over the competing Emerson S.Q. set because a guide I consulted (I was in Borders) suggested that while Emerson's playing may be more correct, the ABQ's live performance is more spirited. This is evidently one of the major recordings of the late quartets, so worth a listen regardless of whether it's the "best." My initial impression of the C sharp ... Read More: |

| ... but there needs to be a warning here for casual listeners or those with more traditional tastes. If those describe you, this is not for you! However, this is a very emotional composition and I credit the Kronos Quartet for their masterful portrayal of the mental and emotional anguish that Alban Berg must have suffered as a result of the events which inspired this. | These are absolutely fabulous string quartets, and the performance and sound quality are flawless. I would buy them again in a heartbeat if I wanted a second set. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

| The ABQ slashes at the opening bars of the 'Death and the Maiden" Quartet to a nerve-racking degree, and they keep up the razor's-edge intensity throughout, with respites only in the slow movment. The "Rosamunde' reading is less foerocious, but EMI has remakes of both quartets in live concerts from the 90's that are mellower without losing intensity. This follows the same pattern as with the ABQ's two Beethoven cycles, where the live remakes are better all around.
