| Has it really been three years since Al Stewart's last release? It seems almost like yesterday that I bought and reviewed A Beach Full of Shells. I said at the time that it was the best Stewart album since The Last Days of the Century, but that opinion is now eclipsed by the release of the masterful Sparks of Ancient Light.

| I think this is my favorite Al Stewart CD. I love the way Stewart's songs manage to capture the feel of a particular historical event or decade. The song about Lindbergh is probably my favorite. From the tempo of the beat you can feel the optimism of the public in the roaring twenties. There is no hint of the depression quickly approaching. | I had an LP of this wonderful album in college back in the '70s. I recorded my favorites onto tape and listened to them in my car for years. I'm amazed that it took me another 10-15 years to buy Al Stewart's "Past, Present and Future" on CD.
Although not directly fulfilling his initial concept of a century-by-century trip through the last millenium, Stewart does well enough with six history-tinged tunes (Old Admirals, Warren Harding, The Last Day of June 1934, Post World War Two Blues, Roads to Moscow and Nostradamus). ... Read More: |

| Visted with Al last evening at his first 2004 concert in Southern California, With the support of Lawrence Jubar, Al offered another fine night entertainment. I was a bit disappointed, however, by his selection of tunes that leaned heavily on "Between the Wars" and only offered "House of Clocks" from the Down in the Cellar album. Unlike others here, I found Down in the Cellar to be far superior to Between the Wars. In fact, I don't rate the later album very high on Al's list of top albums. | I liked that many of these songs fit into the "one hit wonder" category, it was fun to listen to them again after all this time. I agree with what many people said about the news snip-its randomly inserted through out - while I didn't completely hate them, it was annoying when I created an itunes play list with some of these songs for a party and all of a sudden the music stops and some weird recorded voice stated speaking about some news-worthy event. I thought they might show up as separate tracks on the CD, providing the ability to omit them from playlists, ... Read More: |

| A somewhat less than stellar Al album is light-years ahead of just about everybody..
Even though the liner notes say Al doesn't remember much of the recording for this, the relationship fog he was in gave him an extra bit of something somehow making this album a winner... There isn't one song on here I'd toss off the record and the rare additions including the intense News from Spain are a great bonus.. Al shifts from mildly disheartened to deadly earnest to tongue in cheek and back again often in the same song. The guitar playing is nimble and unique ... Read More: |

| I've followed Al Stewart for over 30 years since my high school days. His distinctive, soothing voice and his storytelling ability are second to none.
I think this is one Al's best albums. True, Midnight Rocks and Candy Came Back are probably more reflective of Peter White's style, but these tracks are nevertheless outstanding and demonstrate Al's versatility and raw abilities as a musician. Murmansk Run/Ellis Island, Rocks in the Ocean, and Optical Illusion, by contrast, are vintage Al Stewart - simply outstanding! Overall, an excellent album you'll never get ... Read More: |
