| The conductor and the singers can make a beautiful song the opera that everyone jeers and hates. To have a Russian singer doing o mio babbino caro is just plain silly...give the woman a break and play something from Russian opera...give a beautiful melodic aria to a lyrical singer like Caballe...boo hiss. Try Opera's Greatest Moments where they give Hvorostvsky an aria from Pique Dame and leave the bel canto to bel canto singers. |

| I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity ... | this really is an amazing set. rarely are compilation sets filled with such consistently good music as well as offering the breadth and diversity found here. also, this is THE introduction to opera, as far as i'm concerned. if you don't enjoy opera after listening to this set, then opera is probably just not for you. |

| Although these recordings from 1976 and 1977 have their fans, Karajan's second Beethoven cycle for DG marked a troubling shift. Compared to his acclaimed 1963 cycle, the timings for all three symphonies here are extremely close, sometimes within seconds. Yet the vitality of the earlier performances has been compromised. Karajan no longer digs into the phrasing; we feel that we are kept on the music's surface. The change isn't drastic most of the time, but it's undeniable.

| I purchased this CD at the recommendation of my choir director, as we are performing it in March 2009 and it is sung most similarly to how she will conduct it. As she had mentioned, there are some odd pronunciations which I would have noticed even had she not said. There are a few overly dramatic holds at the end of some of the pieces but overall it is well done and what I needed as I am rehearsing it mostly on my own (due to missing rehearsals from business travel). I will probably try another recording of this beautiful work at some point. |
