| Interesting to hear this performance. I had heard a number of good things about it and went in with high expectations. I, unfortunately, did not get what I expected, however I was surprised in several parts and it turned out to be a wonderful performance.

| This is an amazing recording. I want to say that I also own Klemperer and Gardiner's "definitive" recordings, one being ultra-romantic, the other being the polar opposite period performance. Both are fantastic in their own way; however, after a while with only "extremes" I felt I needed a blend. I knew just where to go. I bought this fantastic recording off Amazon, and was not disappointed. It does not have the blazing speed of Gardiner's recording, yet is never lethargic in places (as one could easily say about Klemperers). ... Read More: |

| Bernstein conducted this traditional British-style performance before historical interpretations caught hold. Since he didn't like that style but knew that it was much closer to reality than this dinosaur, he gave up Messiah as far as I know, saving is attention for Haydn's choral works, which he conducted superbly. This reading isn't bloated or draggy, but it's jsut way off the mark. |

| "Inside U.S.A." was a huge hit revue with the unique Bea Lillie, Jack Haley of "The Wizard of Oz" and such future names as Carl Reiner (not on the recordings). "Atlanta" was apparently cut as it doesn't appear in any programs of the show, and it is revue material with topical references so younger Broadway fans may wonder what the hell Bea is singing about (Atlanta was known for it's federal prison, imagine her in a neat striped suit and matching pillbox hat with a ball and chain to twirl), but her spirit was perhaps as well captured on ... | A friend made me aware of Adele, I had never heard of her. But, now I am telling all my friends about her. She has a dusky, soulful voice and is a great deliverer of text. Her music is easy to listen to, just washes over you. The dual-disk is awesome. The second is an "unplugged" version of the first. I enjoyed both equally. I highly recommend this CD to people who like sultry jazz with an alternative style. |
