| Wusthof's Pull Apart Shears would be my one "desert island" necessity: I use them for snipping fresh herbs such as mint, basil and rosemary, snipping macerated fruit into smaller pieces, cutting parchment paper to fit pans, making quick work of coarsely chopping pecans and walnuts, and chopping vegetables such as asparagus into uniform lengths. | My wife has used the ones from Target (the Michael Graves design). We like them fine; there's nothing wrong with them functionally, but we both prefer these OXO containers. We now have one of each size and will not be looking elsewhere. The OXO is perfect.

| We just got "The Crusher" yesterday and my husband immediately installed it in his shop/garage. He was so excited you would have thought I handed him $1000 cash! He`s wanted one for awhile so I finally got him this one for his B-day after looking for one in a store. I looked at some of the others, but they didn`t look very sturdy. | I bought this to replace a deteriorating plastic-framed Oxo. I like getting twelve slices instead of eight. I like the all-metal design.
However the coring center should be a larger diameter. I frequently have to trim the seeds from larger apples. Also the blade needs better sharpening and tapering. The Oxo had a better blade design; the radial blades were spot-welded to the core and then sharpened as one unit. But this Leifheit has tabs fastening the radial blades to the center. | I almost didn't buy this set because I figured I'd have no use for a gimmicky curved knife and a serrated blade, I only wanted the normal paring knife, but the set was only a little bit more expensive than an individual paring knife. As it turns out I use the curved knife more than any other knife I own, and the serrated one more than the normal paring knife- I was fully prepared to hide those two knives in the back of my drawer and never look at them again, but they are really great. | I'm a huge fan of Cook's Illustrated and consider their reviews when buying equipment, which led to my choice of this thermometer versus another when the one I'd had for years died.
Only problem? It failed after just a few weeks and uses - which were stove top (i.e. I didn't fry the cable cooking things at 500 degrees in the oven).
