Well as a former US Army Tanker, I am writing this from that view. I had the privilege of serving with good soldiers, who on one occassion watched this movie together, as a company. The critisicm never ended.
I do like the actors in this movie, but the background, tactics and overall unit organizations shown in this picture, were pitiful. I can understand the equipment that had to be used to film this picture, but the dialogue could of been much more based on military reality. I feel ... Read More:

Near the end of WW2, three Americans and three Germans stumble upon a cottage, where a German woman and her son open their door to these cold battle-weary men. Inside, they discover commonality of spirit, and honor. A wonderful story that opens not only hearts but minds to the possibility of acceptance and even friendship at Christmas in a war-torn world.

This movie is hugely underrated, and often poorly misrepresented. At least it appears so from a lot of these reviews.
Perhaps as others have said, it was and still is marketed incorrectly, as some believe the absence of "War-like Violence" leaves much to be desired.
But define war?? At least in its true, non text book sense and this movie will speak volumes.
It's an incredibly intelligent, poignant and heartbreakingly honest film, driven by 'the wait' for an enemy that never emerged.
Perhaps our ignorance ... Read More:

This moving film is the best Christmas movie to date, the more so because the events depicted actually happened (1914), and not only in the Ypres trenches but in several points along the entire Western Front. That anonymous enemies decided all of a sudden to stop the war for a moment of worship and kindness may smack of "sentimentality" to some, but that's the whole point! That even at the worst of times, humanity is the basic nature of mankind. Don't forget these soldiers faced a court martial, even a firing squad, for their brief night ... Read More:

Among the steady stream of disgusting, vulgar, and /or western civilization-bashing crap that flows like a sewer from our Left Coast, we get a little reminder every once in awhile that the United States is not completely the Great Satan. We do have a redeeming quality or two. Thank God for a generation that didn't bow the knee to British oppression and tyranny. (Anyone who thinks the British were righteous during that period probably also thinks that Islam is a religion of peace.) Today we are the world's oldest democracy because that generation ... "The General" and "The Twilight Zone" are, in my opinion, the two most brilliantly conceived films ever made. "The General" keeps you glued to the screen, with sight gag after sight gag. Keaton was a genius and this was never more evident than this movie. Kino did a super job of offering three different music scores, each giving new life to the film. I personally recommend Robert Isreal's score as it's more comical than the "adventuresome" score Carl Davis did. Don't buy the cheap release with generic music score and non-restored film print. It is this ... Read More:

I've had this movie on VHS for years and decided I would like to have a DVD version. The movie is outstanding and will always be a classic. However, this DVD lacks in quality of packaging. They have recorded both sides of one DVD rather than making it a 2-DVD version. The case is the cheapest kind you can find. I saw this package in the Walmart 2/$10 bin one time and didn't buy it because it was so cheaply packaged. I would recommend the 2-DVD version sold by Amazon, even if it is more expensive.

One of the very funny lines comes from an officer watching through binoculars as Nick Holden brings a boat load of nurses back to the sub from a bombed island: "Wow -- now that's what I call scavenging!" The officer is played by Dick Sargent, the second Darin on "Bewitched."

Matt Sherman comments that he's a little concerned about Lt. Holden's influence and recommends a little less "Wow" and a little more "Tsk Tsk."

I don't even know why people would even compare this movie to The Titanic. Pearl Harbor Came out in 2001--4 years after The Titanic. It also came out just in time for The 60th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I was living on Hickam AFB, Hawaii, right across the street from Pearl Harbor when the DVD was first released and I bought it right away. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I was basically living right where the whole battle took place. Living on the base and watching this film, I immediatley felt the undenying emotion of the whole bombing and ... Read More:
