| This was the most wonderful show I have seen on TV or on live stage. I have purchased several DVDs to give to friends and family. My g.daughter and her little friends all love it. They particularly love Damien, who was fourteen when the show was first shown on PBS, but they also have a fondness for Keith, who was about five years older. | The Original Three Tenors Concert was held during a very warm month: July. The actual date was July 7, 1990 at Terme di Caracalla in Rome, Italy, to commemorate the World Cup Football finals. The location was spectacular: the fabled Roman ruins of the Baths of Caracalla. | Until I saw this version, my preferred Carmen was the Rossi film with Julia-Migenes and Placido Domingo. But this is even better. Antonacci is an even more sultry Carmen with a great voice and a superb actress. Kaufmann is handsome and a much better actor than Placido. D'Arcangelo is an extremely virile Escamillo. Plus, the sets and direction create an intimate, intense production. Add to that the wide-screen and superb sound of the blu-ray and you have everything that a video opera should be. Buy this! | If they give awards for opera performances, Anna Caterina Antonacci as Carmen and Jonas Kaufmann as Don Jose are surely both deserving of the highest honors. The singing, acting and sizzling passion between them in this production is extraordinary! I am a big admirer of Jonas Kaufmann and he was simply wonderful in this role. But, I've got to say, I was unexpectedly blown away by Anna Caterina Antonacci! I've seen her sing and act very expressively in a few Don Giovanni productions as Elvira, but I guess a role ... | I will admit to having some doubts about this performance before viewing it. First, several years ago, I gave a glowing review to the DVD and CD of the performance under Solti, finding Angela Gheorghiu to be the definitive Violetta. Second, I have been less than satisfied with some of Renee Fleming's recent performances on CD, finding them to be mannered and self-indulgent. Well, all my misgivings were rendered unwarranted. This performance is a knockout.
