| I saw a tape of another production of "Daughter of the Regiment" and it was fantastic. The DVD I received from Amamzon was different, although the cast was the same. The quality of the film was poor, the lighting was bad, and there was a different conductor. All in all, it did not have the same electricity as the first production that I saw. |

| Do not hesitate to buy this DVD. It is worth every dollar. The four singers really stand out, Netrebko with her angel-like voice, Vargas with a wonderful tenor voice, Garanca as a colorful mezzo and Tezier as a brilliant baritone. Each and every aria are outstandingly sung and when the four of them join to sing both an aria from Rigoletto and from Traviata their voices blend wonderfully. | From the Met, broadcast in 1987. Two great singers a little past their prime, but the Rigoletto Quartet alone makes this DVD worth owning.
In the Rigoletto, Dame Joan's voice opens up and is as full, agile, spikey and powerful as it had always been. Her final note in the quartet is vintage Dame Joan. | What a shame that the only existing DVD of Juan Diego Florez in one of his signature roles is in this wrong-headed "Don Pasquale." Wrong-headed because once again we have an opera director for whom restraint seems to be a four-letter word. Yes, this is opera buffa, but as anyone who has seen a successful performance of this piece knows, the moments of comedy are leavened with those of genuine heart and poignancy. | "The Bell Telephone Hour" ran from 1959 through 1968. I remember watching many of the programs in that time. A number of these featured operatic performance, some of which are captured on this DVD. As a result, this work is a nice historical time capsule of some of the best singers of that era. As a side note, it is interesting to observe that this was one of the first TV programs to feature color.

| For me, the stars of this production are Riccardo Muti and his orchestra. There are many scenes in "Don Pasquale" (e.g., the fake marriage) where what is going on in the orchestra is more exciting than what the performers are doing onstage. In other words, Donizetti wrote a magnificent score, beginning with an overture that can easily stand alone as an orchestral piece. | No wonder Renata Scotto and Carlo Bergonzi are legends! I was hooked by their incredible voices immediately, especially Renata Scotto, whom I had not seen in a performance before. Her range, her control, her gorgeous high notes, her pianissimo were simply wonderful. Her duet with the flute brought the house down.
