| Most new Disney editions have been improvements over what has come before, but this new edition of SLEEPING BEAUTY is an unparalleled improvement on all previous editions. Before receiving the new Platinum DVD copy I dipped back briefly into my old VHS copy that I had for my daughter when she was a child. 4:3 ratio, poor color, in general nothing special.

| When I heard Paul Newman passed away the other day I immediately thought of all the wonderful movies he was a part of, and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid is one of my favorites so I had to watch it again.
So many wonderful scenes and lines that I never get tired of seeing - the jump into the river, Sundance (Redford) asking if he can move when shooting and of course Butch (Newman) trying in his own way to have the train doors open. | I remember this film vividly because when I first saw it, it was at a cinema in Paris--and this was my first time in the City of Light!! Also I was on my 3 day leave from the Air Force and when I saw that famous scene when warden Strother Martin beat Luke (Newman) after he says, "Boss, why are you so nice to me?" to which Martin utters the famous lines, "What we have here is a failure--to communicate", it rang in my ears as an ironic twist to my days in Basic training. | I've seen this film a few times, but when I saw Paul Newman's review of the film in his remarks on Elizabeth Taylor, on TCM, I felt, as he did, that Ms. Taylor was a great actress and her performance was "right on". "Elizabeth is a true actress and survivor--while she made this film, her husband Mike Todd, died. We all tried to help her, but she said "the work is what keeps me going". | I first saw this movie in black and white one summer when I was a teenager and I thought it was very steamy then. Now I'm a grandma and it's almost as steamy. I was a little disappointed the movie had been colorized...but Paul Newman is gorgeous! |

| In this case, old is definitely better! I had seen this movie several times on TV, but had missed scenes that had been cut for commercials (i.e., fashion show in color, while the rest of the movie was in b&w). Although the new version of this movie is up-to-date in its views of women, the original was definitely more "catty." Also, the new version missed out on the triumphant face-to-face scene between the wife and the other woman at the end of the original. | WOW...just plain WOW. You get 3 of Paul Newman's greatest movies for this low low price. They are packaged in standard DVD cases just as if you were buying them separately in a store....except you are getting each for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price you would pay for them separately. Actually I think Paul Newman's performance is better in these 3 movies than in some of his pot-boilers like Cat On a Hot Tin Roof or The Long Hot Summer (where his performances seem stiff and over-acted). | The musical is not my genre of choice. I prefer classic film-noirs which are about as diametrically opposed to musicals as a genre can be. That said I enjoyed The Sound of Music immensely. The songs were very moving and fit the storyline perfectly. Speaking of the story, unlike the case in a lot of musicals, the plot in The Sound of Music does not exist simply to move the film from one musical number to another.
