The story of a Danish woman (Meryl Streep) who finds herself running a farm in Africa from 1913 after her husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) decides to opt out for the life of a hunter. | I have not seen the orginal version of this movie, so I cannot comment on this as a remake, but I do like this movie. There doesn't seem to be much chemisty between the two main characters, so when they fall in love, it doesn't seem that believable, but almost everything else about this film is engaging. It's an enjoyable movie to watch and most of the characters are interesting in their own right and well-played by the actors. |

It's a work which has both very good and mediocre qualities. The build-up of the plot is just smashing. With well-paced action and competent acting, it's a remarkable work to watch. Problem first erupts little when Redford kidnaps the lady. It is very difficult to believe that a lady would like to be part of the deadly problem Redford is in for just one night charm, no matter how lonely she is. "Absence of Malice is one of my all-time favorites, and the first "older" movie that I grabbed when it was finally released on DVD. | Legal thrillers rarely satisfy me. It takes a really strong one to peak my interest, hold it and keep me remembering it long after it's through. I guess I just never warmed up to them the way that a lot of movie goers have. That, coupled with the Tom Cruise bug, has kept me away from `The Firm' for some time. I adore Holly Hunter, and her Oscar nomination did make me curious, but as a whole I just wasn't that interested in giving this film a try.

| It's a story that happens all the time in Sub-Saharan Africa. Some corrupt government comes to power and executes its opponents.
This is worth a rental, but not a purchase. The acting was decent. One big goof was that it looked like Africans from several different parts of the continent were used and it showed. (People from one region tend to favor one another in spite of the fact that they are from different tribes.) |

| The first time I watched Tootsie was when I was 12 years old, heard this Stephen Bishop song on the TV, and surprised to see an oldmaid clutching a baby and looking admiringly at the baby's mom. The song seems out of place.... [After I finished that second half of the movie, I rewound the Betamax tape--my brother had already watched it full--and re-play the whole thing just for me.]
But later, how Dustin Hoffman made me believe he was a legitimate old lady in heavy makeup, in love with Jessica Lange but cant express it, was amazing. ... Read More: |
