| I got this for our "movie night" group the week after Newman's death in lieu of a Woody Allen pick that was originnaly on the schedule. It was very fitting; and we had all forgotten what a great film this really is.
Gleason is superb (even with the limited screen time), George C. Scott very much holds the plot together, and Newman plays the pathetic hero so very well. "Let's play pool, Fat Man..." |

| ...the more they stay the same. A classic film that's a little raw in its telling, but is still a film with a lot to say. Broderick Crawford gives a great performance of a 'Hick' lawyer that pulls himself through the muck with good intentions, but soon finds out how much mud can stick to you and sling onto others. | Body and Soul isn't the great fight movie - the first half of the movie is often too conventional and formulaic for that - but it's certainly a contender even if it loses the title to The Set-Up. It's certainly one of John Garfield's best roles, finally getting into the ring: the play Golden Boy had been written for him only for the producers to cast him in a supporting role instead, so there's an element of unfinished business here, though Abraham Polonsky's script is much better that Odets' rather patronising fairytale. | This is a better movie then the new one they made with Colin Farell. It is more refreshing to watch a movie that is easier to understand about the history then the confusing flashbacks that do not explain enough. |

| I am going to break away from the pack and call this one a five star movie. It is a slow movie, unless you are constantly analyzing the actors, and why they did this or that, or played it this way or that way, which is the way I viewed it. I found the performances riveting and could not take my eyes or mind off the Peter Fonda character--such great acting as a pale, insecure, asylum inmate.
