| Another great 70s film that was made into a poor 21st century film. This film is matter of fact without loud music and greatly exaggerated mugging passing off as acting. Yes, the characters are exaggerated for effect but not like acting is now. The story and the movie are more subtle but the story is classic cinema. | There was a reason why this film played in theaters for about 5 minutes, people stayed away in record numbers!! Goes into the "What Were They Thinking?" file. Terribly done, a misguided mess that ruins the score and plot,is totally void of charm. The performances are mediocre , at best. | Luckily they avoid completely revisiting old ground by setting this one in the South. It contains quite a few gags but the laughs are fewer and far between. It has a more serious look at some time honoured cliches about the South (evangelism, racism, quaintness) which may be less fair as time goes on, but as they say cliches exist for a reason. Chevy Chase's swansong and the last passable effort of his career - unless you want to count Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Buy the double CD with Fletch or else skip this one.

| This is one of the funniest movies of the 80's. Why it wasn't more popular is a mystery right up there with why a horrible show like "Seindfeld" was so popular and a brilliant comedy like "Titus" was done in 3 seasons.
The scene near the end where Robbin Williams and Jerry Reed are in a shootout in the woods will have you in tears.... Comedy brilliance. |

| I saw first saw this show on VHS sometime back in 1984 or 1985, and haven't seen it since, so it's possible my memory playing tricks on me, but I would swear that there were scenes in the old edition which are missing here. Good bits. The Internet Movie Database tends to support this theory, because it lists the running time of "Divine Madness" as 95 minutes, while this DVD has a running time of 86 minutes.
I can't enumerate precisely what those missing 9 minutes contain, but I do have a strong recollection of Bette Midler on the floor ... Read More: |
