| Despite the high regard many romantics hold for this film, I find it predictable and bare-boned in its plot, as were many early films. Many excellent romantic movies have been made over the ensuing decades, but you should watch Casablanca at least once, for it has influenced the English language. |

| There are westerns (with John Wayne, Gary Cooper, directed by John Ford, Howard Hawks, not to mention Roy Rogers and Gene Autry) and then there are Errol Flynn's westerns. I think I saw some of Flynn's westerns on TV before I saw any of the others and was therefore very surprised to find that DODGE CITY, VIRGINIA CITY, THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON, etc., were unlike any of the other films in the genre. | Probably one of the best box sets around, you just can't fault it!
The 3 disc version of "The Maltese Falcon" is worth the money alone as it includes the original 1931 version with Bebe Daniels and the 1936 comedic version ("Satan Met A Lady") with Bette Davis and I have to admit that the first version is as good as Bogart's blockbuster if not better in some respects. | I grew up with this old Christmas favorite, and it is one of my annual Christmas rituals to watch this film along with some wonderful film versions of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The music is wonderful, and Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby make a great team, as do Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. And you can't beat those wonderful Irving Berlin tunes. It takes one back to a more innocent time and helps you recharge and then come back to face today's challenges. | Looks like Warners is putting their box sets out on the cheap now, and not issuing the films individually. I am not entirely sure, but I'll bet they put the dvds in slim cases (ala Film Noir Vol. 4) or a giant gatefold (ala Joan Crawford Vol. 2). This is very disappointing for asthetic reasons only, which makes this argument entirely superficial. Otherwise I am thrilled that they are issuing these great films, particularly "Galahad", "Clitterhouse", and "Giant". Would buy them even if they came baked in a cake with a chisel. |
