| This is one of Newmans best, because he plays a completely dispicable
person with no redeeming qualities. He has no scruples and no character. It is a great departure for Newman and he does a Great job. |

But I must confess some personal bias here--first, because I've had a crush on Peter Coyote for most of my adult life (though his role here is definitely supporting, not major), and second, because my personal life parallels what Rawlings experienced--though I came to a mountain (with a creek) to do my writing. Rip Torn's performance as Marsh Turner is just stellar--one of the best things I've ever seen him do. | Elmore Leonard wrote a few Westerns in the '50s that became successful films and this one along with "3:10 to Yuma" still stands out as one of the best of its kind. Kevin Costner has stated in interviews that this film really influenced him in the making of his revisionist Western "Dances with Wolves"--and one can see why. | I had seen this movie years ago & just loved it so I bought it. Barbra Streisand is great in this movie. Richard Dreyfuss as usual is awesome. Without spoiling the movie for anyone, I really can't go into great details about this movie other than if you are a big fan of Barbra Streisand & Richard Dreyfuss I highly recommend this movie. Barbra gives a great performance as "Claudia" a neurotic, insecure, emotional rich "Call Girl" who has been charged with Manslaughter in the death of one of her johns. | It's an interesting story of what happened during the time of the coal barrons and how horribly the miners were treated. However, it seriously lacks any excitement and I found myself wondering when it was going to end. I love the cast, but I really think the director could have made better use of their talent.
