Alina Cojocaru gives an outstanding performance. She dances with such grace and beauty that it is hard to imagine anyone else in this role. She alone would makes this a DVD worth owning. But of course there is much more to praise in this performance. I very much liked the sets but they seem to overly stretch the capacity of the stage. Marianela Nunez is very fine as Myrtha. My one complaint is the camera work at the end of Act 1 - R.Nicholson covers it well. I am very pleased with this Giselle and ... Read More:

I agree with some of the assesments made by reviewer Ivy Lin, above, however, I disagree with others. This production of the beloved Christmas classic by the Royal Ballet does indeed incline more to the older Russian than the later Balanchine interpretation, which is more familiar to American audiences. I happen to prefer the former. I also agree with Ms. Lin that the dancing of Alina Cojocaru is one of the chief pleasures of this very traditional and pleasing production, which is everything a Nutcracker ... Read More:

I thought a lot before I bought this production. I actually saw it live at the Kennedy Center during the summer before this was recorded and I was so disappointed. I had waited so long to see the Royal Ballet perform Sleeping Beauty live.
I ought to say here I'm one of probably a few who actually like the Anthony Dowell 1993 production. I think Viviana Durante was amazing and Dowell himself as Carabosse gave the performance of the ages. I wasn't that nuts about the scenery but thought the costumes (especially ... Read More:

Carlos Acosta IS Spartacus. The identification of role and dancer is absolute and all encompassing. There is passion, power, subtlety, conviction unmatched elsewhere. A big dancer in dances that demand big ample movement, Mr. Acosta's every pore, every muscle convey the character's deep emotions and committment to great, sweeping ideals. The technique is phenomenal. Ironically, what one remembers as most riveting is the eyes. There lives Spartacus, fighter, hero and very much a lover. Given the arduous role, Russian ballet ... When this disc arrived I saw Ross MacGibbon credited as the video producer, and cringed: Oh, no, not the man who demolished Swan Lake at the Mariinsky! My expectations rose a bit when I thought that Khachaturian's musical language and Grigorovich's dance language might lend itself to quick cutting better.
It turns out that MacGibbon clearly knows and loves the Spartacus ballet, and respects the flow of the music and dance. Ironically, his cutting is much more conservative with this modern piece. Still there are too many ... Read More:

Okay, so this is a ballet, not a black-and-white noir with Robert Mitchum or Burt Lancaster. And the title is, in my opinion, too clever for its own good. Yes, choreographer Matthew Bourne uses great chunks of Bizet's throbbing, tempestuous music, but the story has little to do with Carmen. The Car Man is based on The Postman Always Rings Twice. It's as horny, bloody, brutal and melodramatic as the Garfield-Turner movie or the book, and with an added erotic twist. In other words, it's a great noir story which has been turned into ... I thought I probably already had two of the best "Firebirds" with the Royal Ballet's VHS recording of Dame Margot Fonteyn and The Kirov Celebrates Nijinsky with Diana Vishneva, but when I saw this BBC copy starring Leanne Benjamin, I think I may NOW have the best. This version is as close to Hi-Def as you can get in quality of reproduction w/o being an HD DVD. Being a Pal format, I cannot play it on my Hi-Def. player but using a Phillips player with component input and progressive scan it is very close to perfect.

Leanne ... Read More:

I noticed some reviewer has stated that the DVD disc he/she received from amazon was defective because it would not play on his/her DVD player. I thought so too, and I purchased the product knowing it was an HD-DVD thinking it would play on my player since it had an HDMI output and was connected to a HD television set. But, guess what? It WON'T play on a non-HD player. I contacted the dealer from whom I bought the HD-DVD and they said they would gladly give me credit for the DVD even though it was opened and MY fault. I decided to keep the HD disc ... Read More:

DVD : Explosive Dance
If you like dance, you'll enjoy "Explosive Dance". Filmed at the Royal Albert Hall as a Red Cross benefit, this medley of dance styles has something for just about everyone; ballet, modern, jive, salsa, Irish step dance, even flamenco. The main gripe I have is that there are no subtitles to tell me exactly what the heck I'm watching. Some of it I recognize: pas de deuxs from "Sleeping Beauty" and a weakly orchestrated "Don Quixote", and the unmistakable thunder of "Riverdance" (the performance opens with the delightful "Trading Taps" and closes with ...
