This is a sprightly and riotous take on The Barber. Its charm lies in the smooth integration of music, acting, and sets. It is there to entertain, and it sure does!

I am generally not a fan of `traditional' performances as the sets tend to be cluttered and the costumes unsexy. Or maybe it is just that many male singers look unappealing in tights... Whatever the usual problem may be, it is not present here. The singing honours do go to Cecilia Bartoli--not just for her impressive vocal ... Read More:

This DVD of Mozart's Don Giovanni is a really good one by my standards. The top-notch cast, brilliant scenery and costumes, and wonderful orchestra make this one of my favorite Don's ever. I personally don't like Herbert von Karajan, but I learned to tolerate him. Samuel Ramey as the vile Don was a great casting decision. He blends vivacity and vileness it one very impressive package. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is a brilliant Donna Anna. Her high notes are absolutely stunning and sings with a firm foundation. The ... Read More:

This delightful production of Salieri's Tarare should be a welcome edition to any music lover's library. The performance is excellent, period instruments, bright & delightful costumes, an artistic direction & set design that emulates the late 18th century; and above all superb singing and acting make this DVD quite memorable.

This opera partakes of the traditions of French opera as modified and reformed by Gluck and progresses beyond into a new realm of theatricality. The opera, as conceived by both ... Read More:

DVD : Monteverdi/Henze - Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria / Jeffrey Tate, Salzburg Festival (1985)
This is one of the best operas on DVD! Buy it, enjoy it!
Outstanding performance of the hole cast.
Daphne Evangelatos and Thomas Allan are really fabulous.
The orchestration by Hans Werner Henze is full of emotions, fits perfect and is an great bonus to the beautiful Monteverdi basis.
If you like the pure Monteverdi, you will love this Monteverdi-Henze mixture.
The staging is really poetic and beautiful made.

This is a small, beautifully designed, lovingly executed production, helmed by two talented young singers. No expense has been spared (particularly with the costumes) and director Michael Hampe obviously has a great affection for and understanding of the material. His command of the stage action is perfectly matched by conductor Ralf Weikert's jaunty conducting. Doris Soffel makes a spirited Isabella, and one can certainly understand why she's pining for Lindoro, as played by the boyish, slightly goofy Robert Gambill. They both ... Read More:

DVD : Rossini - La Cenerentola / Chailly, Murray, Araiza, Salzburg Festival
This is an excellent Cenerentola, not perfect but excellent none the less. Let me go through the singers one by one.

Araiza was one of the world'd best in this sort of role at this period in his career. He has at least three versions on disk. He has beauty of voice, range, color and muscianship.

He has always been criticized for over separating the notes in the passage work. Some hear this as aspirations. He does sing all the notes but some people think he cheats by injecting the little breaths. Bartoli (a Cinderella) ... Read More:

This production is about as sparkling a work as I've seen in quite some time. Salieri's score shows very heavy influences of his rival, Mozart, in particular his overture reminded me a good bit of Nozze di Figaro. It's perhaps easy to see (or hear) why
Mozart outshone Salieri. Mozart (we know) was genius who accomplished the unbelievable and amazing in such a brief span of life. Nonetheless, Salieri is very worthy of exploration and his works, this in particular, should be heard by modern audiences. I can't think of a better production to do ... Read More:

The music and singing are for 5 stars, specially Luciana Serra. Her technique is really great. Her coloratura is perfect and reminds Sutherland's because both had a perfect technique, specially coloratura, but not a particularlly pretty voice. As a reviewer said in other review they don't make singers like those now. What bothers me in this DVD is the stage and costumes as in all other DVD recorded at Schwetzingen, always so classical. They need a Dario Fo or similar to create something different, a new atmosphere as it is happening arround the world. Examples ... Read More:
