The story of a prominent and wealthy Jewish family, whose feud with a Roman friend nearly destroys them. An extremely emotional story against the backdrop of the birth and crucifixion of Jesus Christ is one of the greatest epics ever filmed. The chariot race is one of the most impressive and longest action pieces I've ever seen! That sequence alone takes the film out of the realm of greatness into an outstanding piece of visual cinema!

These two films are really rather poor. Even though they are mercifully short (Hand is 67mins and Tomb is 60mins) they have few redeeming qualities. The acting is at times rather wooden and in the case of the Mummys hand two of the heros are vaguely reminisent of Abbott and Costello. Whether this was intended I very much doubt.

The Mummy itself is a pretty clever makeup creation (no CGI remember) and there are one or two moments in both films where the closeups of the mummys face must have ... Read More:

Interesting collection, this. As the title implies, these are stories of beautiful but deadly females.

NOTABLES:

BLONDE ICE is a postwar film noir about a reporter who marries two wealthy men and murders them both.

Ed Wood Jr. shocked the world in 1954 with his crossdressing semi-autobiographical film, "Glen or Glenda." Two years later, Wood scripted THE VIOLENT YEARS, a story of crossdressing juvenile delinquent GIRLS. Their odd little gang takes to robbing gas stations, ... Read More:

If you are a Bela 'fan' and on a budget then this PACK is for you. Like other reviews have stated, " for a buck a flick how can you complain ? ".
Unfortunately some alleged perfectionists want lobster and filet mignon for a buck each.

Bottom line is that I have all of these Bela flix individually on DVD and a few recorded off TV and it still ran $50 !! I bought these way before the PACK came out.

If you are a Bela fan then this is an economical way to see 'your hero' in many of ... Read More:

This 1934 version is produced by Monogram Pictures, one of the studios in so-called `Poverty Row,' slang used in Hollywood to refer to the smaller film companies specializing in low-budget action adventure films. Some of these studies made a low-budget version of classic literature and such titles as `Oliver Twist' or `The Moonstone' were produced by Monogram (both available on Alpha Video DVD). These films run only about 60 minutes and you just cannot find the same artistic value as MGM's `David Copperfield' or ... Read More:

DVD : The Martyrs of the Alamo
Even though the feature-length film was in its infancy in 1915, this film actually doesn't seem all that bad. It's not exactly the stuff of great classic cinema either, but it doesn't seem crude, stilted, or primitive the way some other very early features do. In particular, I really enjoyed the great battle scenes. The film, the earliest known surviving Alamo film, tells the familiar story of the Battle of the Alamo, and unlike a lot of other films retelling this story, actually goes as far as the later Battle of San ... Like just about all other Fairbanks films, this one too is a thrilling, exciting, gorgeous spectacle. Set in South America, it begins when a young girl falls off of a cliff and is miraculously cured by the pool of water she landed next to. She then sees the Virgin Mary appear from out of the side of the cliff, and all of the villagers are in awe of this sight. The girl then uses the water to heal a dying baby, and the locals are even more convinced that this place is really special. Ten years later, it has become a sacred ... Read More:

Gilbert Roland was the forth actor to play the Cisco Kid. Some in these reviews rate him among the top, but alas I cannot agree with that assessment. Warner Baxter was the first to play Cisco in "The Arizona Kid", a role that would win him an Oscar. He was actually better in the sequel "The Cisco Kid" which is my favorite movie in the series. Several years later he would return, but the series had become a low budget project and he was a bit too old and plump for the role. Cesar Romero, who played a henchman in Baxter's last film ...
