| While I am not generally enthusiastic about "moderne" updates of baroque
works, there's something about Rameau that really lends itself to contemporary re-thinking; maybe it's the sheer sense of JOY and humanity of the music that makes it work. | This DVD of the Aix-en-Provence production is very satisfactory, both musically and dramatically. The direction is intelligent, the design elegant and simple; the small stage and spare visual effects manage to create some really hair-raising images. Any version of this opera rests primarily on its female lead, and Mireille Delunsch doesn't disappoint. Her musicianship and acting are exemplary; perhaps her slight French accent could be faulted in this most Anglo piece, but that's my only quibble. The children ... Read More: |

| The stage on this production is almost empty and brightly lighted, including in the "In the shadows" scene (2nd Act). It almost looks like a rehearsal in a small room intended to make the singers work on their characters as much as possible before going into the full set. Regrettably, the result is not good enough and it doesn't succeed in portraying the characters to their fullest. | This current example of European Regietheater can be summed up in one word: monotonous. Verdi's heart-wrenching portrait of a good-time girl sacrificing all for the love of a single man hardly contains a monotonous moment. | I have been watching this DVD of L'incoronazione di Poppea - the Musiciens du Louvre / Marc Minkowski recording - this past weekend. I quite like this DVD version of the opera, in spite of the cuts. However! I do have the Les Talens Lyriques' DVD directed by Christopher Rousset - a complete (uncut) interpretation which I found profoundly satisfying. I also have the VHS video of the Nikolaus Harnoncourt / VCM recording of this opera - which I enjoyed immensely some years ago, in spite of its many idiosyncracies. Minkowski ... Read More: |

Her Adele, in this DVD, and Annchen in Der Freischutz however show a very slight suppresion of spirit that is totally free in her Pamina, Sophe, Blonde (both versions) Fatime, Melanto and Gretel.
