| What superlatives can one say about Alec Guinness that haven't been said? He was a great dramatic actor, as in "The Bridge on the River Kwai." He was a great comic actor, as in "The Ladykillers." Amd his genius comes through in the subject movie, in which he plays a mild bank clerk who becomes a mastermind thief of enormous comic proportions.

| I can only echo the praise for Maria Ewing...she is astonishing...as one reviewer said, not coquettish at all, but obviously a woman with a strong death wish...what an actress she is. I bought this DVD because I have her in Salome and the Coronation of Poppaea, in both of which she is amazing too. But this is the best...she's riveting. | If I had been in the audience at this performance I would have booed from the very beginning and throughout this horrible production. The singing was OK, the recits too slow and ponderous and WHAT was going on in the pit with all those pauses that added beats to pieces?

| This is a truly brilliant production of Puccini's comic masterpiece. | "The Irish R.M." is surely one of the most delightful shows I have happened across. It relies upon absurdity for humor, instead of the coarseness and crudity that have invaded almost every show on television. However, if you are not able to appreciate British humor...please do not waste your time watching this show. | Gianni Schicchi and the Dark Knight are at first sight an unlikely couple but the booklet explains why they have been linked. Schicchi is now a very popular black comedy but the knight's tale is really grim. The music however is pure Rachmaninov and well worth repeat listening. | Get this DVD and also the Julie Taymore "Oedipus Rex" and you have two opposite poles of the mind and music of Stravinsky as well as the power of filmed stage opera and opera just for film. The brutal, gritty live production on stage of "Oedipus" is how that should be done. The dreamy, FX, studio production of "Le Rossignol" is just how that should be done. The music in both cases is perfection. They are perfect foils.
