| Amazon's current listing of the aspect ratio as 1.33:1 is INCORRECT. Like all Blu-Ray productions (that aren't of classic films) Decca's new opera productions on Blu-Ray are 16:9 (or 1.85:1) and anamorphic (according to Ken of the Decca Music Group.

| A very imaginative version of the opera. It is well done and the contrast between the black and white scenes and the use of color towards the end were remarkable. It holds the viewers attention with singers who can also act. I viewed it with my 11 year old granddaughter and she was never bored and asked questions which made it evident she was captivated by the story. I recommend it for all ages. |

| LA CALISTO has become one of my favorite operas. I like the kaleidoscopic range of voices. Marcello Lippi, in a taxing role, plays both Jove AND Jove impersonating Diana. The role requires him to sing in two totally different ranges. But the whole cast is excellent. Maria Bayo is very good here as la Calisto. A previous reviewer called this opera "camp," but it's too fine to be camp (despite the cross dressing). | Dramatically, this production of Rossini's "Bianca and Falliero" from the Pesaro Festival is DOA. The modest stage at Pesaro is crowded with confusing backdrops and folding mirror-doors, which look hi-techy but stifle the action. There's precious little action anyway, and the blocking of actors and chorus is as stiff as old-time Bayreuth. Hoffmann with a twist seems to be the norm anyway. I've seen five versions and every one is different. So who's to say which take on Hoffmann is valid? I frankly don't care. Call me shallow. Hoffmann is a drunken poet and here he is a hunchback, too.

| It is difficult to believe that Rossini's opera seria "Tancredi" was composed in the same year as the joyous "Italian Girl in Algiers." And yet if you listen very carefully to (say) the Act I finales to both works in which every one declares how amazed they are at the turn of events, you might be hard pressed to explain why you think one is the serious and the other the comic situation.
