In my opinion Natalie Dessay is the most enchanting soprano in the world today. She is a high soprano, of the Lily Pons and Erna Berger variety. Her voice is sublime, and her vocal technique and acting ability are flawless. This DVD displays her unique talent in a wide variety of roles. |

| While I am not generally enthusiastic about "moderne" updates of baroque
works, there's something about Rameau that really lends itself to contemporary re-thinking; maybe it's the sheer sense of JOY and humanity of the music that makes it work. | Because I had enjoyed La Belle Helene so much and because I had the French CD version of Duchesse (with Crespin) I felt this had to be a winner. Many years ago I saw an English language version; surprisingly I found I enjoyed it immensely even though French operetta like its German and Austrian equivalent don't travel well when translated, Well, the version under consideration didn't travel well to this auditor. | I don't know why it took me so long to acquire "Helene" on DVD since I have had a CD of it for many years. Recollecting initial reviews were all positive, I can only chalk it up to inertia. Well, I was delighted with the whole performance and since France is unable to to come up with a qualified Helene, they could do no better than Flott. She is not a conventionally beautiful woman, she is, however, attractive, and skilled enough to convince you that she is beautiful. | This is a wonderful production. Please note this is available as a Region-1 DVD Offenbach - La Belle Helene / Minkowski, Lott, Beuron, Senechal, Naouri, Le Roux, Torodovitch, Chatelet Opera for a lot less money. I Sure wish that Orphee aux Enfers was available as well! |

| There are four DVD of Entfuhrung with Malin Hartelius. In two she is Blonde, recorded in 1991 and 1997. She is Constanza here, recorded in 2004. In addition there is a Region 2 DVD from Zurich recorded in 2003 which I have not heard, other than a clip on line. This latest 2004 DVD is probably the best one as the Zurich one was conducted by an assistant conductor.
In my opinion, Hartelius is the best Constanza yet, although some might find her high notes too piano. Whatever is lost dramatically, because of this, is more than ... Read More: |

| I have been watching this DVD of L'incoronazione di Poppea - the Musiciens du Louvre / Marc Minkowski recording - this past weekend. I quite like this DVD version of the opera, in spite of the cuts. However! I do have the Les Talens Lyriques' DVD directed by Christopher Rousset - a complete (uncut) interpretation which I found profoundly satisfying. I also have the VHS video of the Nikolaus Harnoncourt / VCM recording of this opera - which I enjoyed immensely some years ago, in spite of its many idiosyncracies. | Great singing, acting, and music. Having everyone on stage throughout the entire opera kept it from getting visaually boring. I enjoyed watching everyone not just the one singing, especially Bejun Mehta. At first I was puzzled by his voice, but when I googled his name and got more information on him and countertenors, I could appreciate his voice and realize how amazing he is. We have to remember that boys were castrated to keep their high voices, however that's not the best option in these times. Bejun is an great example of the better alternative. |
