A sparkling performance by a very talented group of singers and a first rate conductor. Creating just the right setting to light the spark was the scenery of the fine British-American (by dint of long residence) artist, David Hockney. Get comfortable before the television, press the start button on your remote and let yourself be carried along by the magic of Mozart, the Met cast and David Hockney

Tales of Hoffman is an opera that even a mediocre performance is enjoyable. I have seen much better performances than this DVD, although for the most part I would rate this one "adequate". Nobody seemed inspired except Domingo, the audio from the 1981 production is not up to todays standards (or even the standards of the 1980s), and some of the "creative" ideas of this production didn't work.

The music and singing are for 5 stars, specially Luciana Serra. Her technique is really great. Her coloratura is perfect and reminds Sutherland's because both had a perfect technique, specially coloratura, but not a particularlly pretty voice. As a reviewer said in other review they don't make singers like those now. What bothers me in this DVD is the stage and costumes as in all other DVD recorded at Schwetzingen, always so classical. They need a Dario Fo or similar to create something different, a new atmosphere as ... Read More:

It's true that the picture gets pretty dark. Apparently the video recording was done with normal theatrical lighting instead of the brighter lighting customarily used for televised stage performances. But I can see clearly everything I need to see, and picture quality is the last thing I'm thinking about when I listen to this superb performance.

I bought this DVD to have a video documentation of Alfredo Kraus' Duke. Although he was about 60 years old at the time of this performance, his singing is flawless in tone, technique, ... Read More:
