| If you are looking for just one all-around great dvd of Don Carlo, this may not be the exact thing for you, from a dramatic or visual standpoint. It's a very good recording as to the singing aspects. Pavarotti sings very nicely. He has a nice Corelli-ish edge to the voice which gives the impression of drama, but at the same time he has a lyric feel - I really enjoy listening to him here. Dessi is a great Italian soprano. | I am new to this Aida and its magic spell is now upon me. Of course any Aida will rise and fall on the title role and this is a superior Aida on all counts not least vocally and interpretatively. Some will argue that Leontyne Price is the Aida of our times. I disagree since Price, to these ears, is a singer of the stand and deliver variety. | Too late did I realize that this opera was baroque...which I really don't care for. I find the music monotonous! And, I would not normally review a baroque opera for that reason. Let those who enjoy and appreciate it influence the rest.
BUT, I have to comment on the wonderful performance of Alessandro Corbelli as Marcaniello. I love this guy!!! He deserves an academy award for his singing and acting. He was made to look like an old man with an artificial hooked nose, a ridiculous wig and ... Read More: |

| This Aida features Nina Stemme as Aida and she is very good, and the rest of cast is alright, but not great.
The production, done in 19th century garb, has to be the worst coceptions of Aida ever put on stage. The opera takes place in EGYPT, not Wimpole Street. It canno be changed..the period, the style, costumes etc. Aida can be under done or over the top, but never a 19th century piece. | This DVD is widely available at a very cheap price, and I thoroughly recommend it to fans of Rossini. The production, however, is virtually a costumed concert performance, with the chorus on stands at the back and the soloists standing at the front. Singers move around as needed, but there is pretty much no attempt at acting the roles. They all just stand and deliver. Certainly, what they deliver is pretty good. Muti conducts a portion of the La Scala orchestra along with arch lutes, theorbos, and harpsichord. The playing is very good, though the string sound is more what I expect of a more modern period.
