| Poor Gilbert! He must have turned over in his grave every day since this monstrosity was created.
Removing the opera from Japan and dressing the characters in British 1920s formal attire takes Mikado out of context, and renders it humorless and senseless. Gilbert was a genius. The creator of this perversion is not! |

| We rented the VHS about 12 years ago, when our kids were still kids. Not a film for the ages or anything, but almost perfect if your kids are between 6 and 10. Lots to please the kids, and - there is enough quirky humour for the adults.

| What a strange array of reviews on this amazing little opera. Those who did not like it must have a screw loose. I have watched it at least 5 times since I bought it and shared it with all I know. The music is outstanding, and the lyrics bring tears to your eyes, especially in the scene with the Fox. My favorite vocal and character performances are the Pilot, the Little Prince, the Fox, and the Lamplighter. | I would recommend that if you are interested in the life of Johann Strauss Jr., you can look up a really well done biography movie by Walt Disney from 1963, and it is called "The Waltz King". In my own opinion I feel it is a much better movie. At this time it is only available on VHS, but one can only hope. |

| I have viewed this lovely performance many times and find that it gets more wonderful with each viewing. The only thing that I miss is some kind of subtitle. Some of the words are not intelligible so much of the humor of the English translation is missed. The singers are all first rate with the exception of Valerie Masterson who is simply radiant. Her high soprano gets a bit thin on top but watching her one sees a consumate professional with a sweet sound who is so musical that she totally inhabits the character. There is somthing so ... | I was startled to find such extreme negativity in some of the customer reviews of this version of ARIODANTE. More than any other opera on dvd I've seen, it showed me that I could make emotional contact with the situations and characters in Baroque opera. I've watched it a number of times and it was one of very few dvd's that I am not currently in the process of unloading by selling them. This is, for me, a keeper!
