In my opinion Natalie Dessay is the most enchanting soprano in the world today. She is a high soprano, of the Lily Pons and Erna Berger variety. Her voice is sublime, and her vocal technique and acting ability are flawless. This DVD displays her unique talent in a wide variety of roles. |

| While I am not generally enthusiastic about "moderne" updates of baroque
works, there's something about Rameau that really lends itself to contemporary re-thinking; maybe it's the sheer sense of JOY and humanity of the music that makes it work. This production of Platee is marvelous--- the conducting, playing and (most of the) singing are first-rate. | Gorgeous music, gorgeous singing...a real discovery. I don't mind the modern dress and staging...it's such an artificial plot anyway it doesn't really matter how it's staged. My only objection is to the appallingly stupid English translation in the subtitles: "dost thou..." "thou has wrested me.." English speaking people didn't talk that way in 1764...why was it translated this way? It's better to turn the subtitles off. Otherwise terrific. |

| Get this DVD and also the Julie Taymore "Oedipus Rex" and you have two opposite poles of the mind and music of Stravinsky as well as the power of filmed stage opera and opera just for film. The brutal, gritty live production on stage of "Oedipus" is how that should be done. The dreamy, FX, studio production of "Le Rossignol" is just how that should be done. The music in both cases is perfection. They are perfect foils.

| The production with Placido Domingo and Ruggero Raimondi is a tough act to follow, with its sumptuous outdoor filming. However, this production is far more true to the original libretto. The story unfolds with a much more believeable and understandable story line. Our hapless Jose comes across much more clearly as to how he wound up a soldier - namely to escape a life of gambling, and even assault and battery, in addition to stealing his mother's money to support his habit. | The best thing about this DVD: a chance to be introduced to some of most wonderful music beyond the standard repertory. As someone forever seeking something I haven't heard before, this score was something of a revelation. And this is greatly to the credit of William Christie, and his superb group of singers (Piau, Naouri, d'Oustrac, Piolino, Lehtipuu) who were fully engaged and demonstrated that there is much fine singing beyond the Three Tenors world.

I thought this was an exceptional opera. Fantastic and innovative sets, incredible singers, and emotions set on overdrive. A must see for any fan of opera. In my opinion the show was stolen by Anna Caterina Antonacci. Her portrayal of Cassandra is the very definition of tragedy. You would be hard pressed to find anyone more memsmorizing on stage. Susan Graham also does well as Dido. All in all a wonderful cast. Highly recomended. |

| I don't know why it took me so long to acquire "Helene" on DVD since I have had a CD of it for many years. Recollecting initial reviews were all positive, I can only chalk it up to inertia. Well, I was delighted with the whole performance and since France is unable to to come up with a qualified Helene, they could do no better than Flott. She is not a conventionally beautiful woman, she is, however, attractive, and skilled enough to convince you that she is beautiful. Besides a performance in the theatre is certainly not as invasive as a video camera.
