| I strongly support the other reviewers who have been highly critical of this collection. The quality is very uneven, with many of the stars clearly unequal to the demands of Sullivan's magnificent music or Gilbert's often fiendishly difficult words (these may be "just" comic operas, but you do have to be able to sing them!). | For a number of the operas, the Brent Walker videos constituted my entire experience for that opera. (Now, of course, I own at least one recording of each.) There's a lot to say about this series (much of it less than sanguine, I'm afraid).

| This is one of the 1982 series of G&S productions produced by the BBC. Some of the special effects look cheesy, but of all this series I thought it translated best to the screen.
I loved the Act I finale, with the Peers all misinterpreting the relationship between Strephon and his eternally youthful fairy mother ("Her age upon the date/ of his birth was minus eight/ if she's seventeen and he is five-and-twenty!") | I originally saw this production over 20 years ago on PBS. It was the first time I saw The Mikado and I thought it was rightfully one of G&S's best works. I have seen a couple of other versions, one in a live professional production ($50 a seat) and another that was televised and I think this is still ther better of the three. Just as a lark I thought I would see if it was somehow available on DVD and I knew William Conrad was in it. All I needed to search was Conrad and Mikado and, by golly, it did exist.

| Good choreography, especially funny for I am a Pirate King.
Good recording and video quality. One has to really wonder who chose the cast. Mabel, Janis Kelly, was great in the middle registers, but did not sing up into the stratosphere. Frederic, Alexander Oliver, could sing, but did not quite look the part of a dashing young lad of 21. General Stanley and Ruth were both fine. it contained a lot of old clips and nothing new!!! the dvd case said that it includes over 2 hours rare behind the scenes of the puppetmaster series but that is a lie!!!!! well i am a big fan of these series so i expect a graet cinema movie soon!!!!! |

| I was amazed to find that there could be an edition of the Magic Flute that I simply wanted to turn off - and a Glyndebourne Opera edition, at that! I had bought it with high hopes at our local Stockholm music-shop - it was on sale, and now I think I understand why. The acting, especially Pamino's, is extraordinarily wooden - it is like seeing a high-school performer stumbling through his lines.
