| Although the colors are a bid faded, this is a beautifully shot movie. The scenery is very pleasing, and the acting is superb. The real downfall of the film is the sound. It's as if they were singing into tin cans to burn the sound onto records. At times, it's almost acceptable, then something happens and it's horrible again. This really is a pity, because with good sound this would truly be an excellent, cinematic opera production. |

| I recently saw a staged version of the damnation en direct from the Met in HD at a local cinema. No comparaison possible! I had to force myself to stay awake listening to the concert version on that cd; I had to hold my breath during the staged version! |

| Fortunately, most of the people agree with me. This performance is superb including Kabaivanska voice. The best I've ever heard. Voices and orchestra are excellent. |

| I am learning a chorist partition right now for our concert on March 15 2008 in Quebec City where we will be more than a thousand to sing the Symphonie (no 8) of the thousand : I can appreciate from inside the degree of difficulty of that masterpiece, I have heard 3 different interpretations (none executed by a thousand chorists and musicians though) And this one by Bernstein brought me to tears at 3 different moments... Same for every chorists who listened to this version.

| I have a problem with this DVD on a technical level. The performances from all is top-notch, with the possible exception of Meier's Veil Song. She ducks all the coloratura throughout the whole aria, which is really a shame. She is otherwise excellent. It is so great hearing Alagna singing French. He is really great as Don Carlos, as is Jose van Dam as the king. Antonio Pappano's conducting is also really great.
But the sound on this DVD is really bad. I don't have anything like a high end sound system, just a cheapest Denon receiver with HDMI ... Read More: |

| This film version of Verdi's Othello -- directed and conducted by Herbert Von Karajan, a man of many talents -- is excellent in many respects, and more than adequate in most. The occasional variation in decibel level is perhaps the only flaw. Buckets of water (intended to serve as the spray of breakers) aside, the 'special affects' are pretty good. The film is nicely filmed; there were times I was convinced they'd found some Maltese castle, but apparently it was done in a Berlin studio. | This opera was new to me -- previously the only Prokofiev operas I knew were "War & Peace" and "The Betrothal in a Monastery" -- and I was delighted with it from start to finish. It takes Prokofiev's touches of Commedia dell'Arte and expands them to encompass the entire production, chorus, leads, staging and all. The enormous size of the Bastille stage allows the director, Gilbert Deflo, to place the opposing choruses on opposite sides of the pit and to keep them in view throughout the piece, so that the audience is drawn in through the chorus. | A former reviewer really didn`t like this DVD. I must disagree with him. Yes, the Levine/Met are wonderful, and I hope to get back to it many times. But, this DVD is a very good alternative. I like Van Dam, and I think he is wonderful here. The other singers are also very good. So the staging isn`t exactly traditional, so what? It`s interesting, and doesn`t interfere with rhe music.

| For those who found this production too static, please watch the DVD of Handel's Tamerlano directed for the Halle Festival by Jonathan Miller. In an interview that's part of the bonus material, Miller explains his philosophy of directing operas. Basically, sometimes there is no need to have people moving about the stage. The Pelleas et Melisande with Gardiner and all is so gripping that there is no need for running about the stage.
