| I have been a fan of Jennifer Larmore ever since her early, spectacular recording of Handel's "Julius Caesar," but have unfortunately never seen her sing. This video, then, fills an important gap in my collection, and I cannot praise it highly enough. Larmore is both a fine artist and an entertaining singer: though some of her acting seems a little contrived when compared to, say, Janet Baker, she is never overly silly or annoying. | For a load of fun this opera takes the cake. It is high camp, and very well acted as well as sung, by the end of the opera i was left bemused .
The 3 main characters cast a shadow of doubt on my mind , did Isabella (sung by Jennifer Larmore) have a fetish for leather or plastic (her costume gave me that impression) or was she just a merry hooker. | The singers in this production are not only wonderful but they are miracle-workers as well, with all the perpetual "Comedia del Arte" action going on as they overcome the frenzy and deliver top-notch performances in spite of it. The constant manipulation of drapery in every scene was a bit distracting, but the singing and acting were so good that I still thoroughly enjoyed the opera. The orchestra is great, too, and the filming is excellent. Buy this DVD. It's worth the price. |
